The Weisberg Division of Engineering invites nominations and applications for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in the area of Geotechnical Engineering. Expertise and research focus may include fundamental soil mechanics, slope stability mitigation, laboratory and in-situ testing, innovative data collection, sensor networks and instrumentation technology, interdisciplinary energy and sustainability advances and probabilistic assessment of human-made and natural geo-hazards.

Reporting to the Chair of the Division, the position of Assistant Professor requires a terminal degree, teaching, service and research responsibilities. The successful candidate is required to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses which includes both lecture and laboratory; supervise master’s thesis and undergraduate projects; pursue scholarly activities that include funded research in the field, write and manage grants; prepare peer reviewed publications; engage in academic mentoring; assist in program assessment and execute a continuous improvement plan; participate in professional service; and participate in professional activities and organizations. The candidate must have a strong commitment to teaching excellence and laboratory-based instruction at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and exhibit potential for professional recognition via research and publication in the candidate’s area of expertise. The position is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor level and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate will also contribute to the University’s general education curriculum, with its emphasis on a common First-Year Seminar and core curriculum courses that enhance student’s critical thinking and the College’s support of interdisciplinary programs of study.

Required Qualifications

(1) an earned PhD and BS in Civil Engineering, (2) a research record and course work that matches the candidate’s area of interest, (3) a strong commitment to teaching and advising students at the undergraduate and graduate levels with a primary emphasis in undergraduate engineering education, and (4) a capability of integrating the area of expertise into our curriculum through core/elective courses and laboratories.

Preferred Qualifications

(1) relevant professional/industrial applied experience, (2) previous full-time or part-time teaching experience, (3) ability to develop and teach lectures and/or laboratory courses in the areas of Geotechnical Engineering, (4) record of scholarship and participation in professional activities and (5) experience with ABET accreditation and continuous quality improvement activities.
