The Research Laboratory of Dr. Laksari in the Department of Biomedical Engineering is accepting applications for a fully funded post-doctoral scholar position in biomechanics and modeling of ischemic stroke. The candidate will be starting new research projects in computational and experimental methods to estimate the regional cerebral hemodynamics in patients with ischemic stroke, with the long-term goal of disseminating a device that provides real-time, non-invasive patient-specific estimates for tissue viability. Stroke is the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of disability worldwide. Current estimates indicate that a stroke occurs every 40 seconds in the U.S., leading to a stroke-related death every 4 minutes. The candidate will have the opportunity to work as part of a collaborative team involving biomedical engineering, neuro-radiology and biomedical device development. The candidate is required to have strong mathematical and modeling background with enthusiasm in collecting and analyzing clinical data. The start date is immediate, and positions are initially for 12 months with possibility of renewal. The candidate is expected to lead independent research projects, work closely with our medical collaborators, mentor students, assist with grant applications, and publish in high-impact journals.

Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or a related field
Broad knowledge of engineering, biomedical imaging, software development, biology, physiology
Experience in design of experiment, experimental execution, data analysis, result interpretation, and troubleshooting
Experience in finite element modeling
Ability to effectively communicate scientific data
Excellent track record of peer-reviewed journal articles
Knowledge of image analysis techniques and tools (MATLAB or Python are preferred)
Experience in scientific programming
Experience in mentoring lab members and supervising the works of other
Experience in writing and reviewing fellowships, scholarships, and grants applications
Comfortable working with animal models, and human volunteers
Prototype design and fabrication (CAD, machining, 3D printing, and laser cutting)
Duties and Responsibilities:
Work as part of a collaborative team involving biomedical engineering, neuro-radiology and biomedical device development.
Work closely with our medical collaborators.
Lead independent research projects.
Develop mathematical and computational models of vasculature and hemodynamics in addition to machine learning algorithm.
Effectively communicate scientific data, present at national conferences, and publish in high-impact journals.
Write and submit fellowships, and assist with grants applications.
