Departmental Overview

The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) is an Organized Research Unit (ORU) of the Berkeley campus reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Research. SSL's primary goal is to foster research in space-related sciences and to provide education for the next generation of space scientists. Research at SSL, led by Berkeley faculty and SSL Senior Fellows, focuses on experiments and observations carried out in space as well as theoretical and basic research.

Responsibilities

  • Applies advanced theoretical and mathematical approaches in determining the feasibility of electrical engineering designs of the electrical payload.
  • Plans electrical engineering work, organizes engineers in the electrical design and supervises lower level engineers and technical staff engaged in the design, construction and testing of the flight instrument.
  • Electrical engineering responsibility to ensure the effective design and integration of all components and engineering of the payload in the electrical and electronic specialties
  • Develops specifications for aerospace component procurements.
  • Represents the PI at NASA reviews and conferences on Campus in matters related to engineering design.
  • Works with Instrument Systems Engineers in meeting technical requirements within schedule and budget for the electrical payload design; revises the design and verification as needed; provides all design and verification data to NASA for the electrical design.
  • Leading a team of lower level professional engineers and technicians to build the electrical subsystems of the payload.


Required Qualifications

  • Advanced skills in the planning, development and construction of space systems, including one successful complex space instrument from concept development through operation.
  • Knowledge and skills in systems engineering covering disciplines (electrical, electronic or mechanical) engaged at the instrument level.
  • Advanced systems knowledge to effectively integrate multiple engineering fields.
  • Skills in project management to include organization, planning, quality assurance and scheduling.
  • Skills in supervising staff and establishing work objectives.


Education / Training Requirements

  • Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training


Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-graduate level course work in related area preferred.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The full pay scale for this position is $134,200.00-$263,400.00.
