In the marine applications the demands for energy savings and reductions of emissions are more and more important for the large engine manufacturers and operators. The field is emerging towards autonomous ships, which are controlled by efficient control algorithms, where adaptation, machine learning and generally digitalization are the key components. Control-oriented algorithms are of utmost importance in the development of general hybrid automation and holistic combustion control systems in the naval industry. The work towards hybridization of the overall controls of ships is currently on-going worldwide in co-operation with marine industry, research centers and universities.

Doctoral student position in control engineering

Control Engineering group at Aalto University is looking for a Ph.D. candidate related to advanced control of diesel engines. The research topic will be defined based on the existing research interests together with a large industrial partner and also in co-operation with other universities belonging to the same research initiative.

The candidate should have a M.Sc. or equivalent degree with a reasonably strong knowledge of control engineering, simulation, programming etc. The eager to learn new issues and work in co-operation with the industry are essential. In the projects, practical experiments are carried out with test engines, and the applicant must therefore be ready also for practical work.

The candidate should have strong analytical and writing skills and experience or genuine interest in modern control and automation issues. Previous background in diesel engines, their control algorithms and automation issues is not necessary, but considered as a benefit.

The position is available immediately. It is fixed-term and filled initially for 1 year with an option for extension until the end of 4-year PhD studies. The salary is determined according to the salary system of Aalto University. Employment includes occupational health and social security benefits.

The position is located in the Control Engineering group at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation. The research environment provides excellent opportunities for open-minded co-operation with the highly motivated researchers and partners. The working language is English.
