The University of Missouri (MU) invites nominations and applications for the Department Chair of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE).

The successful candidate will be able to take part in the growth of the College of Engineering and join a rich environment for collaboration with other faculty in Arts & Science, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing, Veterinary Medicine, and Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. The College of Engineering is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. Responsibilities: We seek a dynamic individual who will provide vision, leadership and guidance for academic and research programs; attract and recruit world-class faculty, high-caliber students and staff; develop resources to strengthen the long-term viability, efficiency, and effectiveness of the department’s research and teaching programs; promote collaborative research within the department and across MU; administer the departmental budget; lead and support external development opportunities; be an advocate for the department; promote the visibility and enhance the reputation of the department at the national and international levels; create cooperation opportunities with industry partners; and mentor faculty at different stages of their career.

Required Qualifications: Qualifications and attributes for the successful candidate include an earned doctorate in mechanical engineering, or a closely-related field; a record of excellence in teaching, research and service; demonstrated effective leadership, management and communication with faculty, staff, students, and other administrators; commitment to diversity and inclusion as it applies to faculty, staff and students; familiar with national trends in undergraduate and graduate education; passionate about improving education for all students; knowledgeable about external funding priorities and opportunities; and a strong collaboration record and willingness to collaborate with others.

Preferred Qualifications: Prior administrative experience or leadership at successive levels of responsibility; a record in effectively managing a large budget, experience with external stakeholders at the state, federal and international levels; commitment to shared governance, collegiality, and continual professional development for faculty and staff; commitment to leading departmental discussions regarding departmental vision and strategic plans; desire to lead developmental activities and cultivate alumni and donor relations; and willingness to adopt a transparent, open-minded, respectful and approachable leadership style.

About MU and MAE Department: The University of Missouri is a Tier I research institution and one of only 60 public and private U.S. universities invited to membership in the prestigious Association of American Universities. MU has a world renowned Veterinary Medicine College on the same campus as an innovative School of Medicine and teaching hospital, the College of Business, School of Nursing, School of Public Affairs, and the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources. The MU College of Engineering (http://engineering.missouri.edu/) includes 9 disciplines and 130 faculty members, 3,319 undergraduates, and 600 graduate students. The College is currently recruiting 40-50 new faculty in biomedical innovations, big data analytics, and sustainability. The department offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs through the doctoral level.

The College of Engineering is home to numerous research centers, signature programs, and laboratories. We also house our own office of Diversity and Outreach Initiatives, an Inclusivity Center, and a Women in Engineering program.

The Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Department is one of the largest academic units in the College of Engineering. MAE is committed to preparing the next generation of engineers by offering design-based and experiential education taught by approximately 30 full-time faculty members for its 800 undergraduate students and 100 graduate students. The MAE department offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees.

The department faculty are actively engaged in research at the national and international levels. Research areas include thermal fluids sciences, dynamic systems and control, design and manufacturing, and materials. The department actively participates in interdisciplinary research with other colleges on the MU campus. The department is an active participant in the current thrust areas in the COE, namely, Sustainability with emphasis on InFEWSed (Innovations in Food, Energy, Water and Smart Cities), Big Data Analytics, and Biomedical Innovations.
