The Department of Materials Engineering at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver campus) seeks an outstanding individual for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of applied electrochemistry. The starting date of the position will be September 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Department of Materials Engineering at UBC has recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. Over this period, the Department has distinguished itself with excellence in teaching and research. We are now seeking a dynamic, emerging leader in the field of applied electrochemistry who will complement our existing research and teaching strengths. The research activities of the successful candidate could include corrosion/degradation of materials (including biomaterials), electrochemistry for energy storage (e.g. battery technology), surface engineering (e.g. coatings) or other relevant fields.

Applicants must have either demonstrated or possess a clear potential and interest in achieving excellence in research and teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent, internationally recognized research program, teach at the undergraduate and graduate level, to supervise graduate students at the Masters and Ph.D. level and provide service to the university and the community.

The candidate will hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in Materials Engineering or a closely related field and will be expected to register as a Professional Engineer in British Columbia.

Further information on the department is available at www.mtrl.ubc.ca and information on the employment environment in the Faculty of Applied Science is available at https://apsc.ubc.ca/about/careers.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a statement (1-2 pages) of technical and teaching interests and accomplishments including information on how your research and/or teaching contribute to a diverse academic environment, and names and addresses (e-mail included) of four referees. Applications must be submitted online at http://www.hr.ubc.ca/careers-postings/faculty.php.

Applicants are asked to complete the following equity survey: https://survey.ubc.ca/s/MTRL-AsstProf/. The survey information will not be used to determine eligibility for employment, but will be collated to provide data that can assist us in understanding the diversity of our applicant pool and identifying potential barriers to the employment of designated equity group members. Your participation in the survey is voluntary and anonymous. This survey takes only a minute to complete. You may self-identify in one or more of the designated equity groups. You may also decline to identify in any or all of the questions by choosing "not disclosed".

The initial closing date for applications is April 30th, 2017 but applications will be accepted until a suitable candidate is found.

  • UBC hires on the basis of merit and is strongly committed to equity and diversity within its community. We especially welcome applications from visible minority group members, women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, persons of minority sexual orientations and gender identities, and others with the skills and knowledge to productively engage with diverse communities. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however Canadians and permanent residents of Canada will be given priority.
