The UCI Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in structural engineering. Candidates with a strong background in emerging experimental, computational, and/or theoretical approaches to advance structural & construction engineering through artificial intelligence (AI)/automation and related technologies in these areas are encouraged to apply. The search focus includes, but is not limited to, AI in structural engineering, infrastructure health monitoring at scale, and construction automation; structural engineering-based focus areas like automated modular construction and construction robotics; resilience and sustainability of AI-generated and robotically manufactured structures and the impact of automation on infrastructure life cycle; novel experimental, numerical, and/or AI integrated techniques in performance based structural engineering; and decision making through data science applications for structural systems.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated potential to achieve excellence in research, teaching, and professional activities. We encourage applicants with computational, theoretical, and experimental research backgrounds to apply for this unique tenure-track position. We prioritize the overall originality and promise of the applicant's scholarly work rather than the sub-area of specialization. At UC Irvine, the candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses, develop and maintain an active and well-funded research program, and form synergistic connections with other areas in the department, engineering school, university, and industry.
UCI offers an exceptional environment for a successful career in civil and environmental engineering. Outside of CEE, UCI is home to complementary faculty in fields of natural, social, and information sciences and the collaborative campus environment offers many opportunities for convergent research. It houses interdisciplinary research centers, including the Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS), the Advanced Power and Energy Program (APEP) and the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (CALIT2). UCI consistently ranks among the top 10 public universities in the U.S.
UCI is a Minority Serving Institution (MSI), a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI). These federal designations align with UCI as a national leader of inclusive excellence. We seek faculty who are committed to diversity as well as diverse faculty who will be role models for students.
Located in the heart of diverse Orange County with a population of over 3 million, UCI enjoys the best of what Southern California has to offer: beaches, mountains, deserts, nature preserves, and a broad variety of cultural, entertainment, and intellectual activities. UCI is located 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean, 45 miles south of Los Angeles, and 60 miles from various mountain ranges. Irvine and Orange County also offer an extremely dynamic and diversified business community.
Applicants are expected to have a doctorate from an accredited university in a relevant science or engineering discipline. Successful candidates will be expected to develop a vigorous externally funded research program, maintain a strong publication record, advise students, provide outstanding teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and contribute their leadership and innovative thinking toward excellent programs and projects within the department and the university. Applications should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, descriptions of research and teaching interests, an inclusive excellence activities statement, and the names and contact information of three references.
