The Department of Mechanical Engineering at South Dakota State University invites applications for a nine month, tenure track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank with a start date of Aug 22, 2018. We seek applicants with teaching and research interests in one or more of the following areas: Machine Design, Dynamic Systems, Thermofluid Systems, Materials/Materials Testing (especially non-destructive testing), and Manufacturing/Industrial systems. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Mechanical Engineering, advise undergraduate and graduate students, develop a program of sustained externally funded research and scholarship, mentor student projects; and perform general service to the university, discipline, and external constituents.

An earned doctorate in Mechanical Engineering or a closely-related field is required by start date.

Applicants will be evaluated based on the completeness and quality of application materials, the quality of the applicant’s educational background, the applicant’s potential as a teacher and researcher, relevant engineering practice, and possession of effective verbal and written communication skills as well as effective interpersonal skills.

UNIVERSITY/COMMUNITY:
South Dakota State University is a land grant institution founded in 1881 and is the state’s largest institution of higher education with an enrollment of approximately 12,600 students. SDSU began offering the course of study leading to a BSME degree in 1884. The Mechanical Engineering Department offers an ABET-accredited B.S. program with an historic focus on high-quality engineering education. The department offers both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. There are more than 475 undergraduates and 40 graduate students currently enrolled in the program.

SDSU is a central feature of life in Brookings, South Dakota, a friendly community with a robust economy and a population of approximately 23,000. Brookings is located near the east central border of South Dakota on Interstate 29. The city has an excellent K-12 education system, has access to excellent local and regional medical facilities, has an active cultural and social environment, and has numerous lakes and parks within driving distance. It is 55 miles north of Sioux Falls, a city with a population of approximately 170,000. Minneapolis-St. Paul and Omaha are within easy driving distance. Several multi-national companies have major facilities in or near Brookings, including 3M, Daktronics, Bel Brands, Valero Energy, and Larson Manufacturing.
