Assistant/Associate Professor
Tenure-Track Position with a focus in the engineering of biomedical devices and/or assistive technologies

The College of Engineering & Science at University of Detroit Mercy seeks applications for a tenure-track endowed professorship at the assistant or associate professor levels.  This faculty position is a result of an award from the Clare Boothe Luce program of the Henry Luce Foundation and, as such, includes significant career development funds for a period of five years along with a competitive salary and a generous start-up package.  To learn more about the life of Clare Boothe Luce, please visit http://www.hluce.org/cblbio.aspx.  The terms of the award limits this position to female candidates who are either US citizens or permanent residents.

The Clare Boothe Luce Assistant/Associate Professor is expected to support and eventually lead a vibrant biomedical engineering and assistive technologies program at the University.  As such, the ideal candidate’s research should support the work of creating technologies that enable persons with diminished capacities to lead happy, productive and independent lives.  The program, whose home is in the College of Engineering & Science, collaborates closely with the College of Health Professions and the School of Law.  The program draws on close partnerships with the Veteran’s Administration Hospital, disability groups and other organizations.

The ideal candidate will have an engineering doctoral degree with demonstrated experience in biomedical engineering or assistive technologies. Candidates are welcome from mechanical, biomedical, systems, robotics, mechatronics, electrical or related engineering disciplines. She will be strongly committed to the teacher scholar model, have a positive teaching record and willing and able to engage her students (undergraduate, master and doctoral) in meaningful, career-building research.  The ideal candidate will be entrepreneurially minded in order to support the College’s entrepreneurial engineering culture and to spearhead the commercialization efforts for these technologies.

Interested candidates should apply by emailing a single portable document file (pdf) containing a Curriculum Vitae and cover letter, a one-page statement of research goals, a one-page statement of teaching philosophy, and contact information for four references to the Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department, Dr. Darrell Kleinke at kleinked@udmercy.edu.  Review of applications will commence on March 20th, 2017 and will continue until the position is filled.
