The College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (CEET) invites applications for an anticipated Chairperson to lead the Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME). The department, fully accredited by ABET, is well established and enjoys a solid reputation for graduating functional engineers, research, and service to the community and profession. As a dynamic and innovative leader, the new Chair will set a new vision for the department to advance education, enrollment management, expansion of research opportunities, and industrial partnerships. In addition, the Chair will facilitate interdisciplinary research collaborations to broaden the research portfolio of the college and individual departments while simultaneously manage the teaching mission of the department. The successful candidate will have a solid record of accomplishments in terms of publications, externally funded research program, and engaging leadership. The Chair will report to the Dean of the CEET and the appointment is expected to be made at the rank of tenured Professor of Mechanical Engineering. Applicants with specialties in all areas of Mechanical engineering, as well as related areas, will be considered.

The department consists of 14 full-time faculty members, with anticipated one additional faculty hire by fall 2018, and approximately 625 undergraduate and 90 graduate students. The department offers an ABET accredited B.S. and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Laboratories for materials and manufacturing, CAD/CAM, mechatronics, fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer, material analysis, vibrations, and macro/micro manufacturing are well established in the department. Successful candidates are expected to conduct collaborative research with faculty across our campus whose research thrust is in advanced manufacturing, biomedical engineering, and mechatronics engineering. Strong ties with industries and national laboratories in the Northern Illinois region, including Argonne and Fermi, have helped ME faculty to attract externally funded research projects on a regular basis. NIU has over 19,000 students and is located approximately 65 miles west of Chicago. NIU’s vision is to be the premier student-centered, research-focused public university in the Midwest contributing to the advancement of knowledge for the benefit of the people of the region, the state, the nation, and the world. To further support that vision, the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology is currently applying for Ph.D. degree programs in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Industrial and Systems Engineering as well as B.S. degree programs in Biomedical Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering.

Position Description: This administrative, teaching, and scholarly appointment will begin July 1, 2018. The Chair is responsible for leading and administering the graduate and baccalaureate programs in Mechanical Engineering and executing and facilitating all departmental administrative, financial, and planning functions, including faculty and staff hiring and supervision, workload assignment, tenure and promotion evaluations, regular faculty and staff evaluations, and enforcement of university, college, and departmental policies and procedures. The successful applicant will also develop and enhance industrial contacts and initiatives, facilitate grant and contract activities, be an advocate for the department, oversee enrollment management, advise students, teach undergraduate or graduate courses as needed, and serve as a member of the senior leadership team of the college.

Successful applicants for the Chair position must have an earned doctorate degree in mechanical engineering, or closely related field, and should have a distinguished and proven record in teaching, research, and scholarly publications. Successful applicants are preferred to have related teaching interests and research experiences in, but not limited to, advanced manufacturing (with specializations in additive manufacturing, novel manufacturing materials and methods, and/or biocompatible materials), biomechanics, and/or mechatronics engineering. Industrial experience showing leadership capabilities with good administrative and communication skills will also be considered. A demonstrated commitment to equity and a successful working history with diversity is highly desirable. This selected individual must have a collaborative approach to management and must have credentials to qualify for senior rank and tenure in the Department of Mechanical Engineering as the appointment is expected to be made at the rank of tenured Professor.

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience.
