Location: Syracuse, NY
Pay Range: $90,000 - $99,809
Pay Determination:

Salary offers at Syracuse University will be based on education, experience, and relevant skills, as well as the academic or professional discipline of the position in the context of the home department, school, or college. Salary offers may also be influenced by prior relevant work or industry experience, where applicable. Faculty pay ranges are for 8.5 months salary unless otherwise specified.

Job Description:

Syracuse University's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) invites applications for a full-time non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor in Civil Engineering. The expected start date for this position is August 2025. The appointment is for a period of three years, with the possibility of renewal.

We seek candidates with extraordinary multidisciplinary expertise across multiple civil engineering fields, advanced technical abilities, and specialized expertise in civil engineering education, along with a proven record of educational leadership, curriculum innovation, and external professional engagement. Candidates must demonstrate a strong capability to teach and integrate knowledge across core civil engineering disciplines, skillsets, and tools, such as:

  • Geotechnical and Foundation Engineering
  • Computer-Aided Drafting, Design, and Modeling
  • Transportation Engineering
  • Civil Engineering Computational Tools (e.g., Mathcad, Python, and Excel)
 
The department is especially interested in individuals with a multidisciplinary academic and professional background, the ability to integrate computational methods and applied engineering practices into education, and a passion for preparing students to tackle complex real-world challenges.

While this is a teaching-focused appointment, Syracuse University encourages and supports faculty participation in research collaborations, curriculum innovation research, and professional development activities that advance the department's national and international visibility.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
    • Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, or a closely related field, with outstanding academic credentials and a record of multidisciplinary excellence.
    • Demonstrated advanced technical abilities and specialized expertise across multiple civil engineering domains, particularly in geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, and the application of computational, design, and modeling technologies.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Recognized excellence demonstrated by national or international awards, prestigious fellowships, or leadership in academic and professional communities will be given preference.
  • Demonstrated industry experience and leadership in bridging academic knowledge with civil engineering practice are highly desirable.


Job Specific Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to teaching excellence and educational innovation.
  • Demonstrated success or strong potential in mentoring diverse student populations and collaborating across disciplines.
  • Evidence of professional engagement with national engineering societies and contributions to broader educational or professional communities is desirable.
  • Industry experience, professional licensure (e.g., P.E.), and a record of scholarly dissemination in engineering education or professional practice are desirable.


Responsibilities:

Teaching responsibilities will include a range of undergraduate and graduate courses across civil engineering disciplines, with a focus on multidisciplinary integration, applied learning, and curriculum innovation. Responsibilities include:
    • Developing and/or updating course syllabi and educational materials.
    • Delivering effective, innovative instruction aligned with national best practices.
    • Maintaining scheduled office hours and providing academic advising and mentorship.
    • Contributing to curriculum development projects and interdisciplinary educational initiatives.
    • Demonstrating potential in leadership in advancing civil engineering education through curriculum innovation, professional engagement, and scholarly dissemination.
 
In addition to teaching responsibilities, faculty are expected to contribute to broader departmental initiatives through the following activities:
  • Participating in departmental and college governance, including service on committees, strategic planning, and broader academic initiatives.
  • Participating in course and program-level assessment activities.
  • Engaging actively with national professional societies (e.g., ASCE, ASEE), and promoting Syracuse Universitys academic mission at national venues.
  • Participating in scholarly dissemination activities at national conferences and educational forums.
 
Additionally, faculty are encouraged to pursue collaborative research initiatives or scholarly activities related to civil engineering, applied practice, or interdisciplinary innovation.
