Job Description

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Idaho State University (ISU) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Structural Engineering at the Assistant Professor level. This is a 9-month appointment, with a preferred start date of Fall 2025 or Spring 2026. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a robust teaching and research program that emphasizes both experimental and computational methods in structural engineering and play a pivotal role in growing the department.

The candidate is expected to establish a collaborative, externally funded research program and contribute to professional service. Additionally, they will play a key role in mentoring graduate students and engaging in synergistic activities with fellow faculty at ISU and other regional universities. The close proximity of Idaho State University's Pocatello campus to the Department of Energy's Idaho National Laboratory offers exciting opportunities for research and educational collaboration across various fields, including energy and energy infrastructure. Furthermore, Idaho State University has a campus in Idaho Falls, conveniently located adjacent to INL. Collaboration opportunities exist with at the Collaborative Computing Center (C3) in Idaho Falls, an innovative hub for high-performance computing, as well as the ISU Research Data Center (RDC) in Pocatello. Specific on-campus facilities available to faculty include the Engineering Research Complex (ERC) which includes the Structural Lab, the Structural Dynamics Lab, and the Disaster Response Complex (DRC).

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in structural engineering, with an emphasis on reinforced and prestressed concrete design and civil materials.
  • Contribute, by teaching, to the core civil engineering curriculum. Courses are delivered in-person and via distance learning to the Idaho Falls campus.
  • Establish an externally funded research program in structural and/or materials engineering.
  • Perform scholarly activities including publishing in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at professional conferences.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in experimental methods, and numerical/computer modeling and analysis, including areas such as finite element analysis, AI/machine learning, and uncertainty quantification.
  • Secure external funding to support research activities and graduate students.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Serve as a mentor/supervisor for senior capstone design projects.
  • Engage in collaborative research with faculty at ISU and external partners such as Idaho National Laboratory (INL).
  • Participate in service at the department, college, university, and professional levels.
  • Obtain an Idaho Professional Engineer (P.E.) license within four years of appointment.

Foster a strong collaborative relationship with industry partners.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Structural Engineering or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment. ABD is also acceptable.
  • Demonstrated experience in structural experimentation and computational modeling/analysis.
  • Strong communication skills and a commitment to teaching excellence and student mentorship.
  • Ability to teach concrete design and civil material courses.

Evidence of scholarly achievement and potential to secure external research funding.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience teaching reinforced concrete design.
  • Active or prior registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Research interests that complement and expand existing departmental strengths, particularly in civil materials, geotechnical engineering, earthquake engineering, transportation infrastructure, AI/machine learning, and uncertainty quantifications.
  • Interest in or experience working with industry partners.

Prior industry experience.
