POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN MODELING AND SIMULATION OF METAL ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING PROCESSES

Summary:
We are looking for a post-doctoral fellow to join our research group in the area of metal additive manufacturing (MAM). Current research focus of the group is on the modeling of geometry of parts produced through MAM processes. The successful candidate will conduct research in multi physics modeling of metal additive manufacturing process with energy-material-stress interaction models with a focus in one of the following areas:
1. Geometric modeling for metal additive manufacturing systems
2. Mechanical behavior prediction
3. Process control for Additive Manufacturing
4. Process Identification and optimization for MAM
5. Design for Additive Manufacturing
For validation, the candidate will have access to experimental metal/ metal ceramic additive manufacturing systems at the Additive Design and Manufacturing Systems (ADaMS) Laboratory at the department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta. The current vacancy is a full time position based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Candidate Profile:
The position requires a self-starting researcher with an excellent understanding of numerical methods, metal AM processes and a capability of carrying out independent research. The candidate must also demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills evident through high-quality journal publications in the research area. The candidate should also have the ability to work and lead in a team environment. As a part of the project the candidate will work with a multi-disciplinary team of researchers, graduate students, and industrial collaborators. The ideal candidate shall have demonstrated evidence of the following:
Essential Skills:
1- A PhD in mechanical engineering, computational solid mechanics, materials science, or a closely related field to metal additive manufacturing.
2- Expertise and research experience in one or more of the core areas described above.
3- Established experience in multi physics modeling of additive manufacturing processes evident through published research.
4- Experience in application of FEA coding for metal AM processes with application towards phase transformation/residual stresses/deformation.
5- Proficient in programming in Matlab, C/C++ and in an established CAD and FEA software package, such as ANSYS/ABAQUS and SolidWorks/Inventor.
Preferred Skills:
1- Prior experience of working with metal AM systems
2- Knowledge of residual stress measurement/characterization
3- Experience of carrying out standard mechanical testing and material characterization.
4- Metrology, Tolerance analysis, allocation and process planning.
