Scholes Library at Alfred University invites qualified applicants for the position of Engineering and Digital Projects Librarian. This faculty librarian serves internationally recognized programs within the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Scholes Library is a research-focused specialized library whose primary services and collections support the Inamori School of Engineering and the School of Art and Design at Alfred University. Scholes Library operates in partnership with Herrick Library at Alfred University to form a highly regarded, dynamic, patron-focused unit serving the entire university. This position is a 10-month, tenure-track appointment reporting to the Director of Scholes Library. The successful candidate will have multiple responsibilities within and across the university with primary roles as subject specialist and technology manager for local library systems at Scholes Library.

Multiple roles include:

Subject Specialist, Instruction and Liaison Roles (50%) – this librarian serves as a subject specialist, with responsibility for collection development, technical reference, and providing proactive library liaison services to the students and faculty of the Inamori School of Engineering. This librarian will have primary instruction responsibilities for instructional services within the Inamori School of Engineering. In addition, this librarian would assist in providing instructional support for campus-wide information literacy initiatives that may evolve.

Digital Projects Role (25%) – this librarian will lead support staff in a variety of digitization project activities serving AU Libraries. This role includes project planning and oversight for production and metadata description for objects in the University’s Institutional Repository (AURA), ArtStor Shared Shelf, and other local or consortia sponsored platforms as required.

Technology Role (25%) – this librarian will serve as liaison to the AU Libraries System Team and provide first-line technology and systems support within Scholes Library. During 2018-19, this librarian will work closely with the library systems team and state consortia to help implement and manage our campus implementation of the ExLibris Alma Library Service Platform. Based upon expertise and interest, the Engineering and Digital Projects Librarian may have additional opportunities to select and design special projects in areas such as data management, digital scholarship, or other identified areas of need.

Additional Service – all library faculty are required to serve on Library, College, and University committees and participate in scheduled reference coverage, including some evening and occasional weekend hours.

  • ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent.
  • A strong background in the physical sciences or engineering.
  • Strong computing skills and familiarity with library systems.
  • An ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Enthusiasm for collaboration and a passion for instruction.
  • An ability to meet the technical information needs at the undergraduate, graduate, and faculty research levels including familiarity with patents, standards, technical reports, and specialized data software.
  • The ability to meet the requirements of promotion and tenure.

Preference will be given to candidates with a background in Engineering or Materials Science; experience implementing library technologies; or experience supporting any of the following technologies: DSpace, ArtStor, Exlibris LMS products, or the Springshare product line.
