Scope of Job:
The Electrical Engineering Department at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) invites applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) position in the Computer Engineering program to begin in Fall 2019. The Computer Engineering program is a joint effort between Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and this position will be based on the Brownsville campus. The UTRGV Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BSCE) program is jointly managed by Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The program currently has 7 faculty members affiliated with two departments, serving close to 400 students. The Department of Electrical Engineering has twenty-one faculty members and offers Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering, and serves around 380 students. The Department of Computer Science currently has twenty-three faculty members and offers several degree programs at undergraduate and graduate level to over 1000 students. It is expected that doctoral programs will be developed, which should substantially expand faculty lines and student enrollment in the coming years.

Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates at the Assistant Professor level (tenure-track) will be considered based on demonstrated potential to enhance the teaching, service, and research capabilities of the Computer Engineering program. Applicants must have demonstrated evidence of leadership, skill in interdisciplinary research and collaboration along with an outstanding research program, including high-profile publications and a successful record of extramural funding.

Prospective candidates in all computer engineering areas are strongly encouraged to apply. We are especially interested in candidates with a concentration in computer architecture, digital systems, and embedded systems. Applicants must have an earned doctorate degree in Computer Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited university (at least conferred before the start date).

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
The candidates should be able to teach undergraduate / graduate core courses, develop laboratories, initiate externally funded research, and have publications of research results in archival journals and/or conference proceedings. UTRGV faculty will be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to student success and to advancing the university, college, and program missions. Faculty are also expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to UTRGV’s strategic plan (http://www.utrgv.edu/strategic-plan/), and promote access to post-secondary education to a diverse student body and to become one of the largest and most successful Hispanic-serving emerging research institutions in the U.S.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund – a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code ยง51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
