The O.T. Swanson Multidisciplinary Design Laboratory (a.k.a. the Design Lab) at Rensselaer provides clinical real-world experiences for engineering students that build confidence and teaches them to integrate discipline-specific knowledge with practice on challenging multidisciplinary design projects. The Design Lab process provides a culminating experience intended to prepare students to enter the professional workforce. The projects are open-ended, technically challenging design problems that encompass a broad array of important contemporary issues. In addition to providing project opportunities, sponsors provide a grant and interact directly with the students, faculty and staff who work to provide innovative design solutions.
The Academic Support Engineer (ASE) works directly with faculty as a technical mentor and advisor to undergraduate student teams engaged in Design Lab capstone projects. The ASE works with students in a hands-on capacity to help facilitate project success. This includes regular class sessions, as well as providing additional guidance during office hours outside of class. Responsibilities include leading students through a practical design process, helping students to identify customer requirements and appropriate technical resources, and providing student supervision in prototype design development. The Academic Support Engineer maintains general class and laboratory organization and additionally serves as a Design Lab technical interface with Capstone project sponsors. Individuals hired at the Sr. Academic Support Engineer (Sr. ASE) level, will identify potential projects and sponsors, and assist the Director in securing project sponsorships.
Minimally, candidates will possess a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in electrical, mechanical, computer systems, industrial, materials engineering or related fields, and at least three (3) years of design-related industry experience. A multidisciplinary engineering background and applied engineering experience, along with experience in technical instruction in engineering or a related field is preferred. Applicants for Sr. ASE will meet the above qualifications and have at least five (5) years of progressively responsible design-related industry experience, to include having successfully initiated and managed applied engineering projects. Additionally, Sr. level candidates who have served as a technical interface with external project sponsors are preferred.
All candidates must demonstrate contemporary understanding of industry design methods including computational engineering tools in technical disciplines of electrical, computer systems, mechanical, industrial, and materials engineering, along with the ability to present technical information in a clear, concise manner. The ability to apply engineering principles to analyze, design and implement engineering systems; and superb project and time management skills are essential. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to mentor others, the ability to work with a diverse student population, and the ability and willingness to convey constructive feedback.
