The College of Engineering and Computer Science invites applications and nominations for the Chair of the McDougall School of Petroleum Engineering. The next Chair will have the opportunity to inspire and lead the School to the next level of prominence as the University of Tulsa (TU) is investing and expanding in several strategic research areas to support the ambitious goal of becoming both R1 and a top 75 institution. To support this growth initiative, the newly formed College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Tulsa will significantly increase its faculty in the next 5 years and seeks inspired faculty and faculty leaders to join us in this mission.
McDougall School of Petroleum Engineering was established in 1928 and is considered one of the leading petroleum engineering programs in the world. The department has a diverse body of students representing more than 30 countries and is known for conducting broad research in all three principal areas: reservoir, production, and drilling. Our North Campus research facilities are uniquely designed for conducting macro-scale experimental research, which can be adapted on a field scale. The department offers BS, ME, MS, and PhD degrees in Petroleum Engineering and an ME in Energy Transition.
The Chair will be an experienced leader with an accomplished record of scholarship and dedication to excellence in teaching and research and shall possess a forward-looking vision that will address the needs of the faculty, staff, students, and the nation. The Chair will have the following qualifications.
- Earned Ph.D. degree in Petroleum Engineering or a related field and a record of teaching, research, and scholarly accomplishments commensurate with the rank of full professor with tenure.
- Experience in building and sustaining collaborative cross-disciplinary research.
- Ability to develop and sustain relationships with alumni, industry partners, and federal funding agencies.
- Excellent communication and managerial skills to support and empower faculty, students, and staff.
- Experience in framing and executing enrollment and recruitment efforts.
- Experience with budgets and personnel matters.
The characteristic duties of the chair will be:
- Teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Involvement in active research that complements and enhances existing research areas in the department and the college.
- Overseeing and managing departmental faculty and staff, including performance reviews, contract renewals, and professional development.
- Leading efforts to recruit and retain talented faculty, encouraging diversity and inclusivity within the department.
- Coordination of departmental recruiting of prospective undergraduate and graduate students.
- Coordination of advising and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students.
- Oversight and ownership of the departmental budget.
- Oversight of annual program assessment, program review, and continuous improvement processes.
- Working with the faculty in the department to develop the course offerings for each semester.
- Providing leadership for all aspects of the department.
- Balancing the department's needs and the college's broader interests through effective communication and collaboration.
