Identity recognition and verification using human faces is an important research area that has been studied for a long time and has many application areas including security, law enforcement, distance education, human-computer interaction, and marketing. Under controlled conditions, current face recognition systems can achieve high recognition rates. However, under more realistic and unconstrained conditions (e.g. head pose and facial expression changes, lip motion, occlusion, illumination changes etc.) their accuracy can be limited. In order to overcome these shortcomings, utilization of soft biometric features has gained importance. Soft biometric features use anatomical or behavioral properties of a person, giving some information about the identity of the person but they are not sufficient for identity recognition (such as age, gender, hair color and eye color).

The goal of this project is develop a soft biometric system to support static texture-based face recognition systems under challenging conditions (e.g. low resolution, spoofing attacks etc.) and to make them more reliable. The soft biometric features, which will be extracted from the face will not be restricted to age and gender, but it will also include the person-specific component of the facial dynamics during an affective facial expression or speech. The component of the dynamics of the face, which carry biometric information will be treated like a “signature” of that person and will be fused with the texture based information for face recognition or verification.
