The College of Engineering at the University of South Florida invites applications and nominations for the position of Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The new Chair will have a unique opportunity to impact the direction of a department with a vibrant research environment, a commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, a strong record of engagement with industrial and community partners, and a trajectory for continued significant growth. The position is expected to commence August 2018. Review of applications will begin on December 1, 2017 and will continue until the position is filled.

The College of Engineering at USF has grown dramatically over the past decade, with now more than approximately 7000 students enrolled in the College. The USF College of Engineering is embarking on an ambitious mission to significantly grow its faculty in the coming 5 years by adding more than 100 new faculty to serve its education, research, and service missions. That effort will roughly double the number of faculty in the College. The Department of Mechanical Engineering has likewise grown significantly in recent years, currently enrolling more than 1000 undergraduate students and more than 200 graduate students. There are currently 20 faculty members in the department, with the expectation that a number of new faculty will be added over the next several years. The current faculty represent a diverse range of research interests including robotics, autonomous systems, biomedical engineering, tissue engineering, additive manufacturing, advanced materials, nanomanufacturing, microelectromechanical systems, biosensors, biofluids, clean energy technologies, compliant mechanisms, rehabilitation engineering, system dynamics, composite materials, and sustainable designs. The department has ten professional society fellows and a number of prestigious national teaching and research award winners including the 2012 US Professor of the Year awarded by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, five NSF CAREER awardees, and one NSF PECASE awardee. The department currently offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering. In addition to strong external collaborations with academic, private, and government organizations, the department’s faculty members have strong collaborations across the College of Engineering, as well as the Colleges of Medicine, Marine Science, Arts & Sciences, Behavioral and Community Sciences and Education. In addition, the department’s faculty members have strong ties with a variety of research centers and institutes at USF including the Clean Energy Research Center, Florida Energy Systems Consortium, Functional Materials Research Institute, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, James A. Haley Veteran’s Hospital, Center for Assistive Rehabilitation Robotics & Technologies, Center for Wireless and Microwave Information Systems, and USF Health Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute.

Minimum Qualifications:

Doctoral degree from an accredited institution or the highest degree appropriate in the field of specialization with a demonstrated record of achievement in teaching, academic research, and service. Normally will have produced creative work, professional writing or research in refereed and other professional journals, and be a recognized authority in the field of specialization.

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates should qualify to be appointed as a tenured full professor with expertise in fields related to mechanical engineering. Applicants are expected to have established research enterprises that are well-funded and recognized nationally and internationally. Preference will be given to candidates who possess a significant record of scholarship in programs offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees in mechanical engineering. Experience working in a multicultural and diverse environment will also be considered a strength. Preferred candidates will have a record of leadership and administrative and management responsibilities, which may include leading a large federally-funded research group or center, holding a Chair or Associate Chair position, directing proposal and awards management at federal agencies, or similar assignments.
