The Via Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Virginia Tech (www.cee.vt.edu) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the area of transportation infrastructure materials effective August 2018. The position is anticipated to be filled at the rank of assistant or associate professor. A Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a closely aligned field is required. Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or completion of the FE examination with plans to pursue PE registration, and professional experience are desirable.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, supervise students, develop a sponsored research program, collaborate with other Virginia Tech faculty, and contribute in service opportunities to the university and profession. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated ability to establish and nurture bridges between civil engineering, materials sciences, and other engineering and physical and social science disciplines. The candidate will also have the opportunity to develop research links with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (see https://www.vtti.vt.edu/), which houses the largest group of driving safety researchers in the world and has an infrastructure in excess of $100M.

The successful candidate is expected to have expertise in areas such as multi-functional materials;
multi-scale, multi-physics modelling and experimentation; development of sensors for infrastructure health monitoring; responsive/adaptive materials; recycling, reprocessing, reuse and reformulating of existing materials; development of technologies for large-scale 3D printing; implementation of material discoveries into the engineering practice; and development of performance criteria for long-term durability and sustainability of infrastructure.

Candidates for this position are expected also to engage closely in research, teaching and service activities within the Destination Areas (DA) and Strategic Growth Areas (SGA) identified by Virginia Tech as its future research thrusts (https://provost.vt.edu/destination-areas/da- overview.html). The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage in transdisciplinary research, curriculum, and/or outreach initiatives with other university faculty working primarily in the DA on Intelligent Infrastructure for Human-Centered Communities (https://provost.vt.edu/destination-areas/da-overview/da-infrastructure.html ) and its SGA on Economical and Sustainable Materials (https://provost.vt.edu/destination-areas/sga-overview/sga-materials.html).
