The Department of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo offers undergraduate programs in Systems Design Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, and is a partner in the Mechatronics Engineering program. The programs are highly interdisciplinary, with emphases on analysis, design, and creativity. The support of our programs requires unique, talented educators who are passionate about teaching and learning. The department is committed to providing an outstanding educational experience for its undergraduate students, leading these students to become engineering practitioners, researchers, and entrepreneurs.

The department seeks applications for a faculty position at the rank of Lecturer. The initial appointment is for three years, renewable for another three, and it is expected that candidates demonstrating outstanding performance will be considered for promotion to appointment as Continuing Lecturer. The lecturer is expected to have multi-disciplinary expertise, someone who can comfortably teach many of the engineering fundamentals courses in our undergraduate curriculum, including courses in engineering science and design, physics, systems modelling, and engineering economics to Biomedical and Systems Design students. Candidates must hold a PhD degree in engineering and must be eligible for registration with the Professional Engineers of Ontario and commit to registering within three years.

Besides assigned teaching tasks, the successful candidate will mentor undergraduate students in the first-year program, helping students with the crucial transition from high school to a co-operative university education, and providing a friendly, helpful, respected point of contact with the department. This position requires a willingness to be involved in student outreach activities, an interest in engaging with students to help them to improve their learning strategies and to realize their full potential. The successful candidate must have strong communication and teamwork skills with commitment to professional development and community building. The expected teaching load is 6 courses per year, with regular non-teaching terms of four-month duration every two years for scholarly rejuvenation and development activities. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated exceptional teaching skills.

Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.
