THE JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY

Job Description:

THE JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY: Chaired Professorship in the Department of Civil Engineering.

The Department of Civil Engineering in the Whiting School of Engineering at The Johns Hopkins University, invites applications from distinguished candidates for the Michael G. Callas Professorship in Civil Engineering.

The Department of Civil Engineering provides a dynamic and richly collaborative environment for novel research originating in the field of Civil Engineering.

Candidates who strengthen or complement the Department’s existing efforts in Structural Engineering, Solid Mechanics, Stochastic Mechanics and/or Probabilistic Methods are of particular interest, as are candidates who bring to the Department novel competencies in areas of Infrastructure Systems, Sustainable Materials and Structures or Advanced Modeling and Simulation, including Multi-scale and Multi-physics Modeling within Civil applications. However, flexibility with respect to potential sub-discipline(s) of the Callas Professor is a given and represents a fundamental aspect of the academic culture at Johns Hopkins.

The Callas Professor will have an international reputation in his/her field of research and an exceptional background in sponsored research and teaching.

The successful candidate will be a catalyst for collaborations both within, and outside of, the Department.

The candidate is expected to provide dynamic leadership in his/her field, to interact with the professional community and to contribute significantly to the continuing development of the Department.

Duties include the teaching of Undergraduate and Graduate courses and supervision of a sustained externally funded research program.

An earned doctoral degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field is required and professional registration is desirable.

Applicants will be considered regardless of current rank; however, the successful candidate must demonstrate academic achievements and/or potential, consistent with a Chaired Professorship.

The Callas Professor will join nine other Faculty in Civil Engineering whose research broadly covers the areas of Structural Engineering/Structural Mechanics, Probabilistic Methods/Hazard Management, Geotechnical Engineering/Geomechanics and Coastal/Ocean Engineering. The Department has approximately 60 Undergraduate Students and 30 Graduate Students, nearly all of whom are Ph.D. candidates. The Department maintains laboratories for Graduate Research in Structural, Geotechnical and Coastal/Ocean Engineering.

The University is renowned for its academic freedom and the position offers a unique opportunity for individuals with a commitment to scholarly research and education.

All applications should be submitted electronically (for full consideration, before December 31, 2009), as single PDF documents, to:

callas-chair-search@jhu.edu

Applicants should send their Curriculum Vitae and lists of at least three references.

Address all correspondence to:
