Position Overview

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Kansas invites applications for a non-tenure track Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor-of-the-Practice.

The Mechanical Engineering Department has an established industry-funded capstone design program. The successful candidate will be responsible for capstone-related classroom lectures for undergraduates, securing capstone project funding from sponsors, and coordinating with Mechanical Engineering faculty members in advising individual student projects. The candidate must be comfortable working with industry, in particular industries engaged in the design and/or manufacture of mechanical, electro-mechanical, or thermal-mechanical products. The successful candidate will also teach courses such as CAD, mechanical design, dynamics and controls, and mechatronics.

The term of appointment will be two years with renewable appointment possible. Each year, the term of appointment will be 9 months at 1.0 FTE, with up to three months of summer support possible from capstone fees raised, grant support, and teaching activities, depending on the professor’s ability to raise capstone sponsorship fees. The appointment is Contingent Upon Funding.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering currently has 18 tenured/tenure-track faculty members, approximately 500 undergraduate and 60 graduate students, with programs leading to bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. KU is a comprehensive educational and research-intensive AAU institution that operates through a diverse, multi-campus system, with approximately 29,000 students and 2,800 faculty members. Job Description

80% Teaching – Develop and teach undergraduate courses in Mechanical Engineering. Participate in undergraduate student academic advising. Secure sponsored capstone projects by establishing relationships with industry and other sponsors, manage industry-sponsored capstone teams, work with Mechanical Engineering faculty capstone project technical advisors.

10% Service – Perform service for the Department, School, University, and professional societies. Play an integral role in ABET accreditation activities within the department including but not limited to development of assessment methods for student projects and learning outcomes. Coordinate department-industry relations that could lead to research collaboration with faculty.

10% Research – Work with Mechanical Engineering faculty members to develop proposals for curriculum development, and assist in curriculum and program assessment. Author or co-author journal articles and papers in conference proceedings on topics relating to engineering education.

Required Qualifications

For Assistant Professor-of-the-Practice:
M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline.
At least five years of industry experience.
Must be a U.S. Citizen as required to work with key industry partners.
Experience (volunteer or professional) playing a central role in preparing students for careers in industry as demonstrated by application materials.
Experience overseeing projects in industry.
Experience working with or in industry, in particular industries engaged in the design and/or manufacture of mechanical, electro-mechanical, or thermal-mechanical products.
Organizational and budgeting skills as demonstrated by a record of growing responsibility in industry.
Effective communication skills as demonstrated in the application materials and during the interview process.

For Associate Professor-of-the-Practice, all the above for Assistant level and the following:
Experience working on teams in industry.
Total of fifteen years of professional experience past the M.S. degree.
Strong organizational skills as demonstrated by a record of leadership and responsibility in industry.

For Full Professor-of-the-Practice, all the above for Assistant level and the following:
Experience in leadership of teams in industry.
Total of twenty years of professional experience past the M.S. degree.
Strong organizational skills as demonstrated by a record of leadership and responsibility in industry.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, or closely-related discipline.
Experience in teaching engineering courses in higher education.
