The School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for appointment as Senior Lecturers in the field of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering. The position entails teaching students in the fields of engineering failure analysis, corrosion and wear, or metallurgical thermodynamics. However, experience in teaching a number of general metallurgical engineering subjects, will be an additional advantage. The ideal candidates should have a strong academic interest in teaching and research.

Qualifications and Requirements:
Applicants for the position should possess a first degree in Metallurgy and Materials Engineering or Chemical Engineering, as well as a PhD degree in the similar field. Registration or eligibility for registration as a professional engineer (Pr.Eng.) will be a distinct advantage. A reasonable period of experience in industry or in a research organization will be an advantage. Though the field of specialisation is open, candidates with knowledge beyond a first-degree level in engineering failure analysis, corrosion and wear, or metallurgical thermodynamics will be considered first. Successful candidates for the position would be encouraged to pursue research and related activities in an area of their choice and/or join one of the existing research groups in the school. A record of previous undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience, as well as supervision of master’s and doctoral students to completion, is required. A proven record of research, supported by publications in peer-reviewed journals, is also required.

Successful candidates will be encouraged to pursue further training in higher education after appointment as a requirement for further promotion. Immediate availability at short notice is desirable.

Duties and responsibilities:
The successful candidates will be expected to demonstrate expertise in subjects comprising of metallurgical engineering and the ability to:
- Teach both undergraduate and postgraduate students
- Facilitate and guide large groups of undergraduate students
- Engage in continuous development of the programme, adapting it to the ever- changing challenges facing the university and/or society
- Undertake research in his/her area of expertise in a productive manner, and publish research papers in the internationally accredited journals
- Expand existing and initiate new research programmes, raise and manage funds from national and international funding agencies and industry
- Supervise postgraduate students at master’s and doctoral level for MSc (Eng) and PhD qualifications
- Undertake assigned school duties of an administrative nature
