As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT.

The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver on an industry innovation research project where you will be part of the research team in the Centre for Coastal Protection and Flood Resilience (CFI) to develop a multi-purpose floating breakwater integrated with renewable energy solution such as solar, wave and tidal. The proposed solution must be able to attenuate the wave forces and contribute to the energy production from sustainable sources. As a specialist in naval architecture/hydrodynamist/structure engineer, the successful candidate will work on this cutting-edge projects related to coastal protection and develop a robust and effect floating breakwater system via design interaction that involves hydrodynamics, structural analysis, stability and fluid structure interaction. The candidate has to be well-verse in software related to CFD, FEM, mooring analysis, stability and fluid structure interaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met.
  • Undertake these responsibilities in the project:
  1. FEM Modelling: Utilise FEM software (Ansys/ABAQUS) to design the floating breakwater to ensure structural robustness
  2. CFD/BEM Modelling: Utilise CFD software (Star CCM/Fluent) to study the wave behaviour due to presence of floating breakwater
  3. Mooring Analysis: perform mooring analysis and design suitable mooring system to hold floating breakwater in place
  4. Stability analysis: performing stability analysis to ensure seaworthiness of the floating breakwater
  5. Fluid-structure interaction: Coupling FEM and CFD software in studying the FSI of the floating breakwater under wave action.
  6. Perform experimental test in wave basin to test out feasibility of floating breakwater
  7. Engineering guidelines: Working with team members and industry partners to produce engineering guidelines for floating breakwater design according to risk-based approach
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including structural engineer, hydrodynamic researchers, coastal engineers, marine scientists and experimentalists.

Job Requirements

  • PhD in a related field with a focus on structural engineering, hydrodynamics, or naval architecture.
  • Proficiency in wave modeling software, particularly FEM, CFD, Mooring and Stability related software.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Research experience in offshore structural design is preferred.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and teamwork abilities

Key Competencies

  • Able to build and maintain strong working relationships with people within and external to the university.
  • Self-directed learner who believes in continuous learning and development
  • Proficient in technical writing and presentation
  • Possess strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Show strong initiative and take ownership of work
