The Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering (CAEE) in the Armour College of Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in construction engineering and management. Candidates are sought primarily at the Assistant Professor level, but mid-career and senior candidates with a strong record of sustained success in research, teaching, and service will also be considered. The expected start date is August 2025.
Priority areas of research and education for this position include but are not limited to sustainable construction that drives decarbonization (e.g., reduction in embodied carbon and carbon emissions, green buildings, and impacts associated with energy efficiency), smart, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure systems and built environments, and innovative methods or technologies in decision-making, contracting, financing, risk analysis, and other elements of projects for the built environment.
Successful candidates are expected to initiate and sustain a vibrant externally funded research program that supports graduate students and leads to a strong record of published research; to teach foundational and applied courses in construction engineering and management (e.g., construction project operations and cost accounting, project delivery, and construction methods, estimating, planning, and scheduling); to support oversight and management of programs and coursework in construction engineering and management; to advise and mentor students and student organizations; to build and sustain industry partnerships; and to assume leadership roles in service of their profession. Practical experience in the U.S. construction industry is desirable.

The CAEE Department at Illinois Tech offers ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science degrees in civil engineering and architectural engineering, as well as a variety of master’s degrees and doctoral degrees in civil, architectural, and environmental engineering and related disciplines. The Master of Engineering in Construction Engineering and Management, which this position will strongly support, is the largest graduate program in the department. The department has 15 full-time faculty, 4 full-time staff, over 200 undergraduate students, and over 200 graduate students. Among an array of recent investments, in 2020 the CAEE Department received a large gift from Trimble to establish a state-of-the-art Technology Lab, expanding the university's expertise in civil and environmental infrastructure, building construction field systems, and project controls and collaboration. The newly created Trimble Technology Lab allows Illinois Tech to integrate cutting-edge technology into its curricula, empowering graduates to rapidly transform how buildings and living environments are designed and constructed.
