The Kevin T. Crofton Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering at Virginia Tech invites applications for multiple tenure-track or tenured faculty positions effective August 2020. We seek candidates who are committed to a culture of excellence and inclusion, will conduct innovative and scholarly research, and teach graduate and undergraduate courses.

Particular areas of interest include:
1. Data science with applications in Aerospace and Ocean Engineering
2. Small-satellites and constellations of satellites
3. Positioning, navigation, and timing.

The positions require a doctorate in engineering or a related discipline such as computer science, robotics, mathematics, or physics by date of hire. The positions will be filled at a rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

It is anticipated that the positions will be located in Arlington, Virginia, and will align with initiatives in the greater Washington D.C. metro area, including the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus, Commonwealth Cyber Initiative, Virginia SmallSat Data Consortium, and transdisciplinary destination areas. Virginia Tech has a strong commitment to innovation and economic development. Faculty with an interest in developing entrepreneurial or consultative relationships with companies and agencies in the Washington D.C. area will be encouraged and supported in doing so. Depending upon candidate qualifications, existing relationships can be leveraged to offer unique opportunities.

The successful candidates will join an endowed department comprising 37 faculty members, 200 graduate students, and 600 undergraduate students. The candidates may contribute to the department’s existing collaborations with the Hume Center for National Security and Technology (www.hume.vt.edu), the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (www.ictas.vt.edu) and the Center for Space Science and Engineering Research, or Space@VT (www.space.vt.edu).

Recognizing the importance of diverse teams of scholars, and Virginia Tech’s role as the commonwealth’s land grant university, the Aerospace and Ocean Engineering Department is dedicated to InclusiveVT-serving in the spirit of community, diversity, and excellence. We seek candidates who will adopt and practice the university’s Principles of Community, which are fundamental to Virginia Tech’s on-going efforts to increase access and inclusion and to create a community that nurtures learning and growth for all of its members.
