The College of Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University and the Department of Chemical and Life Sciences Engineering have a postdoctoral position available. The Catalysis Lab of Dr. Frank Gupton works closely with industrial partners to develop processes to be used in commercial flow systems at the industrial scale. Our research focuses on building an understanding of solid-state interactions at a fundamental level and application in catalytic systems. The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to develop and expand upon a diversified technical skill set, including the ability to design and implement engineering solutions, such as reactor types, for process optimization while making a positive contribution towards heterogeneous catalysis processes used in commercial applications.
Research projects for the Medicines for All Institute will involve redesigning and/or improving cost effective and efficient processes for the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients using the principles of green chemistry in batch and continuous flow operations. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in methods development and a familiarity with reactor systems, catalysis and product characterization, inline instrumentation, and heterogenous catalysis preparation. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in gas phase reactor systems, chemical engineering backgrounds, and techniques for catalyst characterization. In this position, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work and collaborate with a vast network of scientists and engineers.
