Job Description:
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the State University of New York at Binghamton invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level beginning in Fall 2024. The department is interested in applying fundamental engineering principles in health applications. Areas of interest include but are not limited to
- Mechanics of soft and biological materials; manufacturing for healthcare (additive, self-assembly, self-healing, stimuli-responsive, biomanufacturing, etc.); polymer composites for biomedical usage.
- Soft robotics supporting healthcare and rehabilitation technologies; prosthetics; surgical robots; motion planning; haptics, and nonlinear control.
- Fluid transport in the human body (e.g., blood, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and mucus); thermal science in medicine, and artificial intelligence enhanced biosensors for healthcare monitoring and disease diagnostics.
The ME Department has a diverse group of faculty members working on a variety of biomedical and healthcare related research problems. This includes research on acoustic sensors for hearing assistance, self-powered devices for monitoring biomedical implants, fluid dynamics modeling of transport in the brain and cardiovascular systems, mechanical models of fetal brain development, and cellular mechanics. All of this research is conducted in collaboration with other departments within Watson, Upstate Medical University, and other leading Universities. We seek to accelerate our research activities in this area by hiring a new faculty member who will contribute to our goal of establishing a Mechanical Engineering for Healthcare Innovation research cluster.
Binghamton University is an R1 public research university and has a large and growing research portfolio in battery technology, advanced manufacturing, electronics packaging, pharmaceutical sciences, healthcare and therapies, and sustainability. The Department of Mechanical Engineering has 25 faculty members, with undergraduate and graduate enrollments of approximately 400 and 125 students, respectively.
