Job Description
Working under the supervision of the Department Chair for Chemical Engineering and Materials Science the *Laboratory Manager *is responsible for supervising and providing needed support for CEMS faculty research labs, specifically the Laboratory for Multiscale Imaging (LMSI), and assisting with the teaching lab facilities used in undergraduate chemical engineering courses The CEMS Laboratory Manager will work closely with the Department Chair, CEMS faculty members and the students using the lab facilities to ensure the operation of these vital research and educational facilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day operation of the Laboratory for MultiScale Imaging (LMSI) including, but not limited to:
  • instrument maintenance
  • consumables planning and inventory
  • student training on instrument use
  • coordination of outside users
  • instrument assistance/operation for the high-end work associated with publications and proposals
  • budget planning and management
  • leads teaching relevant to advanced
  • Coordinate CEMS undergraduate teaching lab facilities, such as ChE 432, and Senior Design Workspaces. These efforts are in cooperation with other CEMS faculty members and staff.
  • Coordinate with the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, Division of Facilities and Campus Operations, and SES Machine Shop with requests for maintenance of CEMS teaching and research lab facilities, including equipment repair and calibration.
  • Coordinate with labs to maintain technical and procedural documentation for CEMS teaching and research lab facilities.
  • Coordinate modernization projects involving the CEMS teaching lab facilities, including space and equipment, as needed.

Qualifications

  • Required Education:  Master’s degree
  • Preferred Education:  Doctoral degree
  • Required Experience:  Equivalent experience in either a physical science/engineering or a life-science discipline. Understanding of educational lab development. 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledgeable in the operation of CEMS lab equipment.
  • Ability to maintain and troubleshoot complex problems with laboratory equipment; design and construction capability may be required in some specialty areas.
  • Knowledgeable in lab safety, as well as standard test methods & procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics and specifications.
  • Capable of creating technical and procedural documentation.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite, specifically Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Good organizational and managerial skills.  Good communication skills, with the ability to interact with all levels of management.
