Job description

As buildings with their walls, floors, and roofs are an essential part of a built environment, the materials and functionality of the building envelopes influence the healthiness, safety, and sustainability of our society. New materials and technologies offer huge potential for restraining and adapting to the climate change and can provide the means for linking buildings to energy and other technical systems.  In Finland, guaranteeing the functionality of structures in energy efficient buildings subjected to existing and future climates is a major, ongoing challenge.

The Department of Civil Engineering seeks an expert who is prepared to integrate and transform these challenges into high-level scientific research focused on the multifunctional use of buildings and condition monitoring of their structural parts. This professorship is expected to promote the development of multidisciplinary research and teaching both within the Performance in building design and construction -research group, and within the university to solve future challenges of buildings and built environment such as ecological sustainability and circular economy. We particularly invite applications from candidates with expertise regarding the energy and moisture performance of structures and materials as relevant in changing North-European climate. You will strengthen and complement the research and education in building physics, indoor air quality, and building services engineering.

All the professors at Aalto University are expected to perform high quality research and teaching, and to supervise on the doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate levels. We expect professors to be active members of the Aalto and international scientific community, and to exhibit leadership and services for society. In this professorship, cooperation with national stakeholders will be important.

You have completed a doctoral degree relevant for the position with shown technical and methodological skills of experimental and/or computational methods applied in building physics. Well demonstrated collaboration skills and a fluent command in English are essential. Your merits and potential will be appraised based on your position-relevant research of buildings, teaching and academic leadership, and activity in scientific community and society. A bibliometric analysis will be conducted for supporting the evaluation of research merits.

Experience in acquiring funding for research projects, preferably also academic competitive funding, multidisciplinary research approach, and co-operation with building sector and research organizations as well as relevant practical experience are considered advantages.

When recruiting for the first term assistant professor position, the evaluation is mainly based on the potential of the candidate in the evaluated dimensions. When appointing the second term assistant professors, the evaluation is based on demonstrated merits and potential. When appointing an associate professor, the candidates must have high academic merits, be of first rank among distinguished members of their discipline and must show a continued contribution to academic research.
