The College of Engineering and Architecture at Howard University is entering an exciting, new phase of transformation and is in the process of hiring new faculty members. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering invites applications for tenure-track and tenured positions at the Associate or Full Professor levels to begin in August 2024 in Transportation and Geotechnical Engineering. Candidates are sought with expertise in emerging and transformative areas of civil engineering, who also have interests in independent and collaborative research on the following areas:

Transportation Engineering:

Potential areas of expertise, research, and teaching interests include but not limited to: multimodal and sustainable transportation systems, travel demand modeling and forecasting, urban mobility behavioral science, intelligent transportation systems, traffic safety, autonomous and connected vehicles, soft-computing, and operations research for transportation applications, and highway and traffic operations. Candidates with a multi-disciplinary approach to develop transformational solutions for the current and future problems in urban transportation systems that can complement the existing strengths and initiatives within CEE.

Geotechnical Engineering: Potential areas of research interest include but are not limited to Sustainable Geo-Infrastructure, Environmental Geotechnics, Bio-Geotechnics, Geotechnical Hazards Engineering, Geotechnical Flood Protection Systems, Geotechnical Impacts of Climate Change, Sustainable Energy and Carbon Sequestration, and other New Frontiers in Geotechnical Engineering. Candidates with a multi-disciplinary approach to develop transformational solutions for the current and future problems in geotechnical engineering that can complement the existing strengths and initiatives within CEE.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful applicants will: 1) establish an externally funded research program; 2) advise, mentor, train, and support graduate and undergraduate students in research and professional development; 3) work with regional and government agencies on basic and applied research; 4) work on interdisciplinary teams to tackle pressing problems in civil engineering; and 5) promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the discipline, Department, and University.

Qualifications Required:

  • An earned doctoral degree in civil engineering or a closely related field
  • Promise of success in securing competitive external funding
  • Success in scientific/engineering research demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications
  • Capacity and ability for excellence in teaching and mentoring
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within the discipline, Department, and University
  • Hold a PE license or the ability to obtain one within a year.
