Two Tenure -Track Positions in Aerospace Engineering Available

The Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering (MABE) in the Tickle College of Engineering (TCE) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK), invites applicants for two open positions at the rank of associate and assistant professor in aerospace engineering. For exceptional cases, tenure upon arrival will be considered. Responsibilities include teaching engineering courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, conducting research in engineering, developing externally funded research programs, and producing archival publications in leading scholarly journals. The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University. It is expected that the candidate will develop graduate courses in her/his area of research to complement the departmental growth. A PhD in mechanical or aerospace engineering or a related field is required at time of the appointment.

Primary consideration will be given to those with capabilities and interests in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Computational Aerodynamics, Rocket and Jet Propulsion, Electrified Aircraft Design and Multi-disciplinary Design Optimization (MDO). The department is actively growing its aerodynamic and propulsion science core. All outstanding candidates possessing strong backgrounds in these areas relevant to mechanical and/or aerospace engineering will be considered as two positions are anticipated. In addition to research in these areas, it is expected that the candidate(s) will teach aerospace propulsion or aerodynamics at both graduate and undergraduate levels.

The University of Tennessee Tickle College of Engineering has the fastest growing PhD program among the Top 40 public colleges of engineering and is ranked 32nd amongst public institutions in 2022. The departments of TCE are nationally recognized, with a US News ranking of 6 for nuclear engineering, 29 for mechanical, aerospace, and biomedical engineering, 48 for chemical and biomolecular engineering, and 58 for biomedical engineering among public institutions. The TCE is undergoing a period of substantial growth in both physical infrastructure and research expenditures as it seeks to become a Top 25 ranked public institution. The college presently has seven departments with 186 faculty members, 3,393 undergraduates and 1,155 graduate students. The department currently has 59 faculty members and enrolls some 1,331 undergraduate and 182 graduate students. Research expenditures in the department are currently at $15M per year. Extensive opportunities for collaborative research exist at UTK and the surrounding region including University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI), Oak Ridge National Lab, AEDC, AMDEC, and NASA-Marshall. Salary is commensurate with the position and experience of the applicant.
