McAlpine Research Group Research Manager

This position provides grant writing and project management support for the Department of Mechanical Engineering’s McAlpine Research Group (MRG), which is focused on 3D printing functional materials & devices. The candidate will write proposals to expand into exciting new areas of 3D printing-related research, often in collaboration with other faculty on campus and beyond. [50%] The candidate will be in contact with 1) various sponsors, including state, federal, philanthropic, foundation, and industrial, 2) project partners and collaborators, including helping to forge new relationships, 3) graduate students, undergraduate students, and postdocs in our group and 4) administrative staff in the Department and University to coordinate accounting and purchasing. [50%]
This position is critical for forging new research areas and developing new funding opportunities. Salary range is $95,000-100,000. The position is a 12-month, annually renewable appointment pending adequate performance. It is an expectation that the candidate will eventually provide 50% of salary through funded awards.
*Duties/responsibilities Writing proposals, for a diverse array of grants, small and large, in multiple fields Interfacing with multi-faceted, interdisciplinary and bold research teams Coordinating proposal preparation with our partners and accounting team Managing subawards with funding agencies and department accountants Staying on budget and tracking project expenditures, helping with purchasing Filing other paperwork, such as project management plans, budget updates, etc. Navigating extensions and project closeouts, budget tracking and forecasting Support the team in operating with efficiency, including progress updates, lab oversight
*Required qualifications include: -Advanced degree with at least 6 years of experience or terminal degree plus at least 3 years of experience. -Typically is responsible for managing a team of notable size, complexity, or significance that, in part, affects how well the organization to which the incumbent belongs operates -Ability to work collaboratively, make decisions, problem solve and prioritize tasks. -Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. -Attention to detail a must, as well as organizational abilities. -Oral and written communications skills are required, with the desire to learn new scientific disciplines and convey scientific knowledge across diverse populations and students. -A key criterion for this position is excellent written and verbal communication skills. -Applicants without a solid command of the English language are not encouraged to apply.
*Preferred qualifications include: -MS/PhD in the physical sciences or engineering, with at least 4 years of experience in writing proposals to a variety of agencies, technical reports, preparing budgets, accounting aspects.
