Hiring: Graduate Research Assistantships Available
I recently joined the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC-Charlotte) as an Assistant Professor of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (SEEM). I am going to conduct teaching, research, and services around areas of Smart Mobility Systems (modeling and simulation) and Spatial Sensing. Self-motivated students with similar research interests are welcome to join my research lab and work with me in this emerging and exciting field to enhance Smart City and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
I’m looking for one or more Ph.D./M.S. students for 2021 Spring or Fall. Experience in transportation engineering is a plus but not required. The idea candidates are expected to have a solid computer programming background (i.e., Python, C++, Java) and project experience.
The following are preferred:
- Academic training and experience with big data, AI/ML/DL, and advanced spatial sensing technologies: GPS, LiDAR, camera, radar, etc.
- Experience with shared and automated mobility system (SAMS), including VRP algorithm design and implementation, modeling, and simulation
- Familiar with vehicle/traffic simulation, such as SUMO, CARLA, etc.
- College degree in Computer Science, Operations Research/Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Transportation Engineering

Dr. Zhu’s research lab – Smart Mobility and Spatial Sensing (SMSS) Lab is focusing on Smart Mobility Systems, shared and automated mobility modeling and simulation, and Spatial Sensing research. It possesses state-of-the-art software and hardware. For example, it has spatial sensing and detection sensors, such as LiDAR, Radar, Stereo cameras, Infrared cameras, Drones, High-performance computing (HPC), etc. Unlimited research opportunities will be provided in the SMSS lab.
