The position will begin by the 1st of September 2022 or as agreed, and is for two years.  

AMRI project at Aalto ARTS is seeking a talented post-doctoral researcher with strong interest in user research, product-service system design, and collaborative design, especially in the field of healthcare.
The position contributes to Accessible magnetic resonance imaging (AMRI) project that is a research collaboration between Aalto University School of Electrical engineering and Aalto University School of Aalto Arts, Design and Architecture. AMRI project aims to bring tissue-sensitive imaging out of the conventional hospital environment, enabling new transformational point-of-need services in both healthcare and wellness. This will be realized by developing novel magnetic resonance imaging and information processing technologies.

Your role and goals

The main task of the postdoctoral researcher will be to map and gather information from the context, processes, and the stakeholders related to medical imaging in selected environments. The stakeholders include medical professionals as well as persons being diagnosed, while the work not being actual medical research. However, the researcher has a chance to be working in alignment with clinical researchers when the clinical studies take place. The research methods leading to applicable design knowledge, and to published research output, can be qualitative and quantitative. The researcher has a chance to select and define their own approach with that objective in mind.
In the Department of Design the researcher will be part of ENCORE research group Through the AMRI project the collaboration the researcher will work closely also with The School of Electrical engineering’s Aalto Robot Learning research group in the that operates in the intersection of artificial intelligence and robotics. (
As AMRI project is a collaborative undertaking between two Schools of Aalto University, there is a weekly interdisciplinary exposure. The research leads to a functional research platform enabling further development of systems for various application areas within healthcare and wellness, requiring active collaboration with parties outside the university. Collaboration with outside research groups within the field of design for healthcare and e.g. imaging is encouraged and short-term visits are supported.

Your Experience and competence
  • Demonstrable competence in human-centered design. These include user research, product-service system design, and collaborative design, especially in the field of healthcare.
  • Cross- or multidisciplinary experience in research and/or practice is appreciated.
  • A doctoral degree in design or suitable discipline.

The more exact framing of the research is chosen depending on your experience and interests. Please relate clearly to some of the research topics in your Letter of Motivation.
Successful candidates will be furthermore given the opportunity to work with research assistants, and participate in some teaching.
