Description:

1. Postdoctoral Position: Synthetic Biology and Metabolic Engineering

The laboratory of Dr. Ting Lu (http://lulab.bioen.illinois.edu/) in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) are seeking a postdoctoral researcher in microbial synthetic biology and metabolic engineering. The position is offered to work in microbial synthetic biology, an interdisciplinary research field that focuses on the design, analysis and construction of genetic regulatory networks for cellular functionality reprogramming. One application of such circuits is to break down plastic wastes.

Essential Duties:

  • Design and construct microbes for deconstructing waste plastics and biomass conversion
  • Analyze products using HPLC/GC-MS/etc.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals
  • Collaborate with other team members and mentor undergraduate and graduate students
    The ideal candidate will have:
  • Ph.D. in biological science or a related field (e.g., metabolic engineering and chemical engineering)
  • Significant prior background and expertise in molecular cloning and DNA assembly for microbes.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to develop and conduct independent research projects
  • Demonstrated proficient communication skills (spoken and written English)
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team and mentor students

2. Postdoctoral Position: Biophysics, systems biology and quantitative biology

The Lu lab in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) are also seeking a postdoctoral researcher in biophysics, systems biology and computational biology. The position is offered to work in theoretical analysis and computational simulations of microbial community dynamics and microbial intracellular metabolic networks. Possible directions include (i) theoretical analysis of microbiome structure and dynamics (ii) theoretical analysis and computational simulations of microbial metabolic networks, particularly the metabolic flux of model and non-model yeast species. (iii) agent-based simulations of microbial communities in space and time.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Ph.D. in quantitative science or a related field (e.g., physics, mathematics, chemical engineering or biophysics)
  • Significant prior background and expertise in numerical simulations (e.g., C/C++).
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to develop and conduct independent research projects
  • Demonstrated proficient communication skills (spoken and written English)
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team and mentor students

Research experience in biological physics or bioengineering logy is a bonus but not mandatory

Salary is commensurate with skills and experience. The initial appointment is for one year and can be extended up to three years upon mutual agreement.
