We are now looking for a
Tenure Track or Tenured Professor, Enzyme Technology
The position is to be filled at any level of the Aalto University tenure track system (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor). The position is full-time and depending on the positioning on the tenure track, either on fixed or permanent term.
An increased use of biotechnical production methods, the efficient use of renewable raw materials, and a transfer to green processes in industry will place new demands on enzymatic biocatalysts. Enzymes are central tools in the utilization of bio-based raw materials, and in the development and manufacturing of materials and products using bio-based components. Enzyme technology will also continue to impact fields such as recycling and upgrading of raw materials, novel food and feed, protein technology, surface functionalization, crosslinking, and fine chemicals. A wide understanding of structure-function relations in proteins and the fields of applications are needed. Tools such as structural analysis, protein engineering, recombinant production, molecular modelling, directed evolution are important for a successful research program. An understanding of advanced screening methods, the use of genomic data, and artificial intelligence/machine learning will further advance the field.
As a professor at the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems (
http://bio2.aalto.fi/en/), you will establish and lead your own research group. You will be responsible for education in the field of enzyme technology and participate in biotechnology teaching at BSc, MSc, and doctoral level.
Scientific Environment
The department of Bioproducts and Biosystems (BIO2) (
http://bio2.aalto.fi/en/), one of the three departments in the School of Chemical Engineering, has an internationally leading reputation in basic and applied research for the conversion of natural resources to chemicals and advanced materials. It is one of the leading European research and higher education institutions in the field of sustainable chemistry and engineering for the utilization of renewable resources. BIO2 aims to contribute to the development of novel solutions to move towards sustainable primary production and processing systems that can produce materials with less environmental impact and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. At the BIO2 department, the enzyme technology professor will have numerous opportunities to link feedstocks and processing to the utilization and products of lignocellulose and other industries. There are excellent facilities for protein research, recombinant protein technology, and bioprocessing for enzyme production. Within bioscience, the department has research in bioprocess engineering, molecular biotechnology, microbial physiology, metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, biomolecular, and bio-hybrid materials.
Your experience and ambitions
We are looking for applicants who have:
- a doctoral degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, microbiology, or another related field
- a research background supporting the topic of enzyme technology
- relevant teaching experience
- a strong publication record
- experience in international collaborations and projects
- documented experience in obtaining research funding
Applicants with an industrial background in addition to a scientific career are very welcome. The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of their research work, teaching and academic leadership and activity in the scientific community.
What we offer
We offer a research-oriented environment, with highly functional laboratories and research infrastructure (
http://www.bioeconomyinfra.fi/). The research groups form a collaborative environment that supports the development of bio-based solutions and provides beneficial interactions and common research topics.
We offer the possibility to work within a well-resourced learning community where the students are rigorously selected and highly motivated. This results in an unusually interactive and intellectually challenging atmosphere.
