Up to Two Doctoral Student Opportunities at The University of Memphis – Transportation Systems Engineering
Position Description:
The Center for Transportation Innovation, Education, and Research (C-Tier) at the University of Memphis is looking to hire up to two doctoral students for the year 2025. Students selected the earliest could be admitted to the January 2025 session. All hires will be for doctoral students in Civil Engineering, focusing on transportation systems engineering. Candidates with bachelor's or master’s degrees in civil engineering, City and Regional Planning, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, and other related fields are encouraged to apply. Responsibilities:
- Conduct research on topics related to traffic safety, transportation systems engineering, driver behavior modeling, and intelligent transportation systems.
- Collect and analyze data using advanced statistical and machine learning tools.
- Develop and validate models for traffic safety and operational performance.
- Contribute to the preparation of technical reports, research papers, and presentations for conferences.
- Assist in grant proposal writing and project management.
- Collaborate with faculty, researchers, and industry partners to solve real-world transportation problems.
Qualifications:
- Must be enrolled or accepted into a graduate program at the University of Memphis in Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Strong academic background in transportation engineering, traffic operations, or related areas.
- Proficiency in programming languages (Python, R, or MATLAB) and data analysis tools (ArcGIS, QGIS).
- Experience with statistical analysis and modeling is a plus.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Benefits:
- Fellowship to cover the entire tuition fee to take relevant courses (International students will not pay out-of-state tuition and in-state tuition will be covered by an award by the university). The tuition fee is around $25,000 per year.
- Monthly stipend of $2,000 - $3,000 per month totaling $24,000 - $36,000 per year. This amount will rise each year based on performance and productivity.
- Excellent health insurance is covered during the entire duration of the doctoral program.
- Additional compensation for summer is made for productive students.
- Travel fellowships are provided to attend the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting in Washington DC every year and other national and international conferences as appropriate during the doctoral program and research relevance.
