Job Description

The Hensley Catalysis Lab, led by Professor Alyssa Hensley in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science (CEMS), invites applications for a Research Scientist position in the field of computational heterogeneous catalysis. The successful candidate will conduct original and innovative research focusing on:

  • Mapping the nanoscale reaction mechanism for carboxylic acid upgrading to green hydrogen over platinum-based catalysts.

  • Applying state-of-the-art approaches to transition state identification in computational catalysis applications.

This part-time position is six-week appointment starting July 14, 2025, or later, and is suited for a highly motivated researcher aiming to thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced research environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform fundamental research into catalyst design and performance for green hydrogen production.

  • Lead investigation into the dominant, nanoscale reaction mechanisms for acetic and glycolic acid upgrading to green hydrogen over platinum-based catalysts using DFT implemented in VASP.

  • Collaborate closely with graduate students and other research staff.

  • Contribute to scholarly publications.

Required Qualifications

  • M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field by the time of appointment.

  • Background in computational modeling for heterogeneous catalysis (DFT, AIMD, VASP, Python, HPC, Bash).

Compensation Range

In compliance with the New Jersey Wage Transparency Act, the bi-weekly base range for this position is $28.00 - $35.32. This range represents the University’s good faith estimate of possible compensation at the time of posting. Stevens Institute of Technology determines compensation based on factors including the position’s scope and responsibilities, the candidate’s experience, education, skills, internal equity, market data, and organizational considerations. The final salary will be set considering departmental budget, qualifications, and relevant credentials. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes additional forms of compensation, such as incentives, stipends, or other applicable pay components.
