Research Associate – Solid-state Fluorine Generation System Development

Lab of Applied Multiphase Process Engineering

Position Summary:

The Lab of Multiphase Process Engineering (LMPE) in the Department of Process Engineering and Applied Science at Dalhousie University (Halifax, NS) is engaged in on-going research and development activities related to 2 and 3 phase systems.

Reporting to the Associate Professor and Principle Investigator within LMPE, the Research Associate is responsible to engage in continued work on the development of a solid-based fluorine generator for excimer laser technology applications, experimentally characterizing the performance of different fluorine sources and applying these results to industrially-relevant conditions/scales.


Source, prepare, load, and characterize fluorine-laden solid media for gas generation potential within gas mixtures typical to Excimer laser systems.
Maintain custom-built systems for batch and recirculating gas evolution testing, ensuring safe operation during testing.
Carry out BET, spectroscopy, SEM, NMR, and other physical characterisation testing techniques as required.
Supervise on-going lab activities, including but not limited to, supporting graduate student experiments and on-going service-based characterization requests.
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: PhD in Materials Engineering or Chemical Engineering (or equivalent) with at least 5 years of post-graduate training and experience. Must have prior experience handling moisture-sensitive solid and gaseous halogenated materials (or equivalent) under high-temperature conditions, with working knowledge of the associated safety protocols and requirements. Demonstrated experience in BET, SEM, FT-NIR, fibre-coupled UV-Vis and NMR analysis methods and associated sample preparation techniques. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required, with experience working in an academic environment preferred. Applicants must be eligible for registration as a P. Eng or EIT within the Province of Nova Scotia.

Status: 32.5 hours per week

Salary: $36,000 per annum, pro-rated to 8 months ($24,000), plus additional benefits.

Duration: 8-month contract starting January 1, 2019.
