Professor of the Practice in Transportation Engineering

 

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Cornell University invites applications for a non-tenured track position as the Mark G. Fornasiero ’89 Professor of Practice in Transportation Engineering.  The School of CEE has recently undergone a significant faculty refresh with several hires under the theme of smart cities.  This position is intended for professionals with rich industry and/or government lab experience in this rapidly evolving space with the goal of strengthening curricular offerings and collaborative research programs, with a focus on emerging topics such as:

  • Transportation and energy systems integration
  • Urban logistics, including same day delivery
  • Autonomous vehicles in personal mobility and logistics
  • Multi-modal transportation systems (from micro-mobility to mass-transit)
  • Resilient infrastructure for climate adaptation
  • Equity in transportation
  • Cybersecurity in transportation systems
  • Data-driven transportation planning and policy
  • Decarbonization of the transportation sector

The successful applicant will be expected to: 

  • Contribute to the CEE undergraduate and graduate curricula in transportation engineering.
  • Deepen Integration of transportation into smart cities and urban tech educational programs.
  • Provide strong context from industry and or government for student research and teaching.
  • Assist with the development of new courses and student projects in transportation engineering, ensuring alignment with cutting-edge industry practices and emerging trends in technology and sustainability.
  • Design and oversee industry-sponsored collaborations and including capstone projects that integrate real-world challenges, giving students hands-on experience and fostering collaboration between academia and industry.
  • Work closely with faculty across Cornell (including Cornell Tech) to develop interdisciplinary proposals that align with key strategic themes, including smart cities, renewable energy integration, and autonomous systems.

This is a 12-month position that is anticipated to be a five-year renewal position based on performance and the availability of funding. The position may include research activities in addition to teaching and advising, depending on the candidate’s interest. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to interact broadly with faculty and students within the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the College of Engineering, Cornell Tech, and the Cornell Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future.  It is anticipated that the successful candidate will begin in August 2025.

 

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Candidates must have significant industrial or governmental experience and hold a master’s or Ph.D. degree.  Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

The salary range reflects an aggregate of qualifications and disciplines across Cornell University.

Assistant Professor of Practice - $58,300 – 152,000

            Associate Professor of Practice - $84,000 – $166,800

Professor of Practice - $100,100 – $237,300

 

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

   Prior relevant work or industry experience.

   Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.

   Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)

   Unique applicable skills.
