We are now looking for a highly motivated and talented

Doctoral Researcher in Distributed Intelligence for Industrial Processes

to join our team and contribute to an exciting research project focused on distributed automation of processes (e.g., motion control-based) which use peer to peer collaboration mechanisms (e.g., swarm intelligence) to coordinate their activities and to optimize both functional and non-functional requirements in order to satisfy multi-objective criterions, such as energy use and reduced maintenance.

Your role and goals
You will work on a project aiming to investigate the potential and benefits of using distributed swarm control of multiple drives, enabled by the cloud-edge continuum, with a focus on developing methodologies, architectures, and AI techniques for enhanced energy efficiency and operational performance. The work is expected to lead to scientific publications in international academic conferences and particularly journals.

Your network and team
You will work together with Aalto Factory of the Future team (https://www.aalto.fi/en/futurefactory), which investigates radical concepts and methods that enable flexibility and high intelligence of industry sectors, based on various technology enablers such as artificial intelligence and the IEC 61499 distributed automation.

Your experience and ambitions
The work will require both theoretical and practical skills in industrial automation and computer science, combined with hands-on capabilities and attitude to work on and implement laboratory demonstrators.  As a successful applicant you should be highly motivated to conduct academic research and obtain a PhD degree.

You must have a master’s degree in control / automation, mechatronics, computer engineering / computer science, or related areas. In addition, good proficiency in English is required, proven with official English test certificate.

It is expected that you are proficient in software development, capable of contributing to open-source software projects (using Java, Kotlin), and application development using programmable logic controllers (using IEC 61131-3 or IEC 61499). Fundamental and practical knowledge on machine learning & artificial intelligence, combined with control / automation are highly advantageous. As hands-on capabilities in implementing laboratory demonstrator are required, past experiences working with mechatronics, industrial drives, embedded system projects are expected. An ideal candidate would have excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, strong communication and collaboration abilities, and ability to work independently and as part of a research team.

The doctoral studies at Aalto University take approximately four years. The researcher is expected to commit to complete a Doctoral Dissertation (to obtain PhD degree) within this time in the project.

Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities. The starting (gross) salary for a Ph.D. student is approximately 2600 EUR/month. It will increase with achievements, such as scientific publications.
