Position Purpose
A Level B Research Fellow position is expected to make contributions to the research effort of the university and to carry out activities to maintain and develop her/his scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or centre.

The purpose of this position is to achieve the research missions set by the Department of Civil Engineering in the focused area of Structures and Materials. The Research Fellow is expected to undertake original research under the guidance and supervision of their Supervisor and/or project’s Principal Investigator(s), within the sub-domain of Cement and Concrete Engineering. In particular, the Research Fellow is expected to lead the development and functionalisation of next-generation magnesium-based binders tailored for carbon capture and storage (CCS) applications in cement engineering, with a focus on scaling from laboratory synthesis to pilot-scale validation. The successful applicant will also be tasked with cultivating a robust track record of publication and engaging in collaborative efforts with other academic institutions, as well as government, industry, and/or civil society stakeholders, aimed at maximising the impact of their research endeavours.
Reporting Line: The position reports to the Project’s Principal Investigator.

Key Responsibilities
1. Execute a targeted research program under the guidance and supervision of the Project’s Principal Investigator and/or Theme Leader.
2. Contribute significantly to the publication of scholarly papers of the highest quality in Quartile 1 and Top 10% journals in the field of research.
3. Assist, when necessary, in the formulation and enhancement of research proposals and progress reports for research funding.
4. Mentor and provide support, as directed, to Graduate Research Students and final-year undergraduate students affiliated with the Department.
5. Participate actively in the broader research and scholarly initiatives within the Department.
6. Assume responsibility, as requested, for the provision of day-to-day advice and support to Graduate Research Students affiliated with the Department.
7. Participate in collaborations with other universities and with government, industry and/or civil society to drive research impact and research excellence.
8. Support the management of education, research and/or administration in the Department through, for example, participation in committees, and others
9. Provide support in the administration and management of the Monash Climate-Resilient Research Hub (M-CRInfra).
10. Occasional contributions to teaching in the area of Structures and Materials.

Key Selection Criteria
1. A doctoral qualification (PhD) or equivalent qualification, with a record of demonstrable scholarly, and professional achievements in Civil / Materials / Chemical Engineering. Candidates who are near completion of their doctoral studies are encouraged to apply, but would be expected to have their PhD awarded by 31 January 2026.
2. Proven experience and a demonstrated track record of excellence, supported by evidence, in the field of cement engineering.
3. Ability to undertake quality research in the area of specialisation, including a record of highest quality publications.
4. Commitment and potential to undertake independent research and professional work, and to attract research and industry funding.
5. Ability to generate new ideas and links, and build upon existing ideas to generate unique concepts and solutions.
6. Demonstrated ability or initiatives to produce excellent research and supervision of Undergraduate/Honours students.
7. Demonstrated ability or initiative to work with partners in universities, government and/or civil society.
8. Willingness and capacity to contribute to collegiate activities, collaboration and teamwork related to research.
