The Laboratory for Low-Carbon Energy and Environmental Sustainability in the Department of Civil & Architectural Engineering at the University of Wyoming (UW) has one postdoctoral fellow position in low-carbon energy and policy analysis (No. 20003834), which will start from Spring 2021.
The laboratory conducts systems research in low-carbon energy and environmental sustainability, which addresses technical, economic, and policy issues related to energy and the environment. Research topics of interest mainly include low-carbon energy systems, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), negative emissions technologies, low-grade heat & water recovery and reuse, and the energy-water nexus under carbon constraints for climate change mitigation.
A postdoctoral fellow will be hired to work on one research project, which will assess how implementation of low-carbon energy standards in the State of Wyoming would impact existing fossil fuel-fired power plants in the State. In particular, this project will establish the supply curve of CCUS deployment for the existing power fleet in meeting low-carbon energy standards and identify opportunities and challenges for CCUS retrofits. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to prepare progress reports, present research results at conferences and workshops, deliver research results to State of Wyoming officials, and publish work in peer-reviewed journals. The research team will collaborate closely with Kipp Coddington, Director of the Center for Energy Research and Policy Analysis at UW.

About Principal Investigator: Dr. Haibo Zhai is the Roy & Caryl Cline Chair of Engineering, Environment and Natural Resources and an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil & Architectural Engineering. Prior to UW, he was a research professor in the Department of Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). He was also a key developer of the Integrated Environmental Control Model, a widely used power plant modeling tool developed by CMU for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory.
