The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of Michigan invites applications for an open-rank, tenure-track faculty position in the area of Sustainable and Resilient Materials, with an emphasis on the department’s strategic directions in the areas of Adaptation, Shaping Resource Flows, and Data-Driven Innovation. Our infrastructure’s growing need to reduce emissions, address climate change, and increase resilience to natural hazards requires expertise in construction materials engineering beyond the traditional approaches of the past. This new faculty position will build on the CEE Department's established reputation for innovation and intellectual leadership in this area, and is commensurate with its strategic vision ( It will also complement the University of Michigan's existing strengths in the broad areas of material engineering and mechanics.

The search seeks candidates who conduct fundamental research in theory, fabrication, simulation, characterization, and/or experimental testing of materials for infrastructure applications. Research areas of interest related to sustainable materials include, but are not limited to, carbon capture with materials, recycling of infrastructure materials, self-healing materials, enhanced lifecycle of traditional materials, biodegradable materials, and material systems for energy efficient infrastructure. Topics related to resilient materials include high-strength materials, behavior of materials under extreme conditions, composite materials, architected materials, and functional materials. Other related areas will also be considered and candidates with strong core fundamentals that allow them to work across disciplinary boundaries are highly encouraged to apply.

The preferred start date for the position is August 26, 2024. To be considered for this position, a PhD (or equivalent) degree or current enrollment in a PhD-granting program is expected. A successful candidate would be encouraged to collaborate with researchers in other departments and colleges across the University and to demonstrate abilities to translate fundamental advances into practice. Candidates are expected to develop new courses that complement CEE’s existing undergraduate and graduate curricula.
