California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions in the Electromechanical Engineering Technology Department. Cal Poly Pomona is one of three polytechnic universities in the 23-campus California State University system and among 12 such institutions nationwide. Since its founding in 1938, Cal Poly Pomona students participate in an integrative experiential learning education that is inclusive, relevant, and values diverse perspectives and experiences. Student Population.  California residents comprise the majority (96%) of applicants to undergraduate programs at Cal Poly Pomona, and 41% of new students were transfers in Fall 2022.  57% of Cal Poly Pomona students are first generation, 70% receive financial aid, and 44% qualify as Pell-eligible.  The university enrolls a diverse student body that identifies as 53% Latinx, 22% Asian, 14% White, 3% Black, 2% International, 4% two or more races, 3% unknown and less than 1% Native Hawaiian or Native Pacific Islander and less than 1% Native American Indigenous. Thirty-nine percent of the student body were STEM majors with the top enrolled programs including psychology, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, biology and computer science.

College of Engineering:

The College of Engineering’s mission is to prepare students for industry and advanced studies by implementing an inclusive polytechnic philosophy through collaborative teamwork, innovation, entrepreneurship and professional integrity. The College offers 12 ABET-accredited undergraduate degrees and 7 Master’s degrees to over 6,500 students across seven academic departments that include: Aerospace Engineering, Chemical and Materials Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The College is nationally recognized by U.S. News & World Report and currently ranks 10th among undergraduate engineering programs in non-doctorate-granting public institutions nationally. Additionally, it houses more than 40 student clubs that offer hands-on learning opportunities and have been recognized at several national competitions. Electromechanical Engineering Technology Department:

The Electromechanical Engineering Technology Department strives to be a leader in polytechnic education, where hands-on learning is the foundation of a broad-based educational experience. The success of our undergraduate programs results from the solid curriculum that incorporates theory and practice in a learning-centered environment. Students are provided with opportunities to apply their knowledge in hands-on projects, collaborate with faculty members on projects, and participate in valuable internships and service-learning programs.

The Electromechanical Engineering Technology Department in the College of Engineering at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) invites applications for tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin fall 2024. Candidate’s specializations in Mechanical/Electromechanical are especially welcomed to apply.

The Position: The faculty member will be required to be able to teach undergraduate classes in all areas of the Electromechanical Engineering Technology curriculum as needed. The primary areas of expertise desired include electromechanical systems, or fluids/thermal systems/HVAC. The position requires excellence in teaching and advising, professional and scholarly achievements, and a commitment to service to the university. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent teaching, research projects, written and oral communication skill. Applicants whose work incorporates a global perspective and a commitment to diversity in higher education are particularly encouraged to apply.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • D. in mechanical/electromechanical/electrical engineering or closely related field from an accredited university by August 1, 2024
  • Ability to teach undergraduate courses in Electromechanical Engineering Technology Department
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusivity and equity. Evidence should be provided in a Student Success Statement that responds to the prompt above - “Inclusive Excellence and Student Success”
  • A commitment to the practical mission of the Electromechanical Engineering Technology Department as indicated in the teaching philosophy instructions
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills 

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

  • Additional professional experience, teaching experience, and/or P.E. license.
  • Preferable expertise: (a) electromechanical systems (b) fluids/thermal systems/HVAC
  • Ability to conduct applied research and develop industry contacts.
  • Commitment to the practical application of engineering principles.
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent teaching, and develop and support Electromechanical Engineering Technology laboratories.
  • Demonstrated ability to be responsive to the educational equity goals of the university and its diverse and international character.

Then prepare, from the list of courses in the Cal Poly Pomona catalog, three lists: (a) courses the candidate is prepared to teach with minimal preparation, (b) courses they can teach with some additional preparation, and (c) new courses they would like to develop for the Department. While the emphasis is on the Electromechanical Systems Program, also include courses from the Electronic Systems Program.

  1. Unofficial transcripts showing the highest degree earned.
  2. The names, titles, addresses, and telephone numbers of at least three individuals who can serve as references and speak to the candidate’s potential for success in this position.

Finalists for the position will: 

  • be required to provide official transcripts for the highest degree before the on-campus interview; 
  • be required to provide three letters of reference dated within the last two years; 
  • Final candidates being interviewed are expected to make a presentation of creative work and a teaching demonstration to faculty and interact with students.
