Teaching Faculty (Open Rank)
Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering
The Grainger College of Engineering
University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

The Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering (MechSE) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) invites applications for teaching faculty at the ranks of assistant, associate, and full professor. We seek highly qualified applicants with a strong commitment to excellence in teaching with a commitment to scholarship and service. This is a full-time on-campus appointment on an academic year (nine-month) service basis, paid over twelve months.

Teaching faculty are expected to teach undergraduate courses at all levels, in broad areas of mechanical engineering, including manufacturing and robotics. A link to the MechSE course offerings may be found at: Course List.

Teaching faculty are considered specialized faculty at UIUC. This is a non-tenure system faculty position that includes a ranking progression (Assistant, Associate, and Full) that is typically appointed on a multi-year, rolling contract. While our teaching faculty are focused on instruction, they should also make substantial contributions through pedagogical and/or disciplinary research, and service. Their scope of work is more specific than their tenure-system peers and the performance expectations are defined under Provost Communication 25.

A Ph.D. in engineering, engineering education, or a related field is required. Ideal candidates include those who demonstrate evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, and/or service endeavors. Competitive applicants will show the promise of excellence in teaching, and at advanced ranks will possess a strong record of teaching and scholarship in engineering pedagogy and/or disciplinary research.

Successful applicants will join the department’s thriving community of creative, passionate, and innovative faculty who contribute to high-quality instruction, curriculum development, and student mentoring. Teaching faculty also engage in research, outreach, and service activities, and are expected to develop active research programs in engineering pedagogy, and/or disciplinary scholarship related to the departmental mission.

The budgeted salary range for the position is $90,000 to $100,000 at the Teaching Assistant Professor Level, $100,000 to 110,000 at the Teaching Associate Professor level and $110,000 to $120,00 at the Teaching Professor level, for a 9-month service basis. The preferred starting date is August 16, 2025, for the Fall 2025 semester. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.

To apply for this position, please create a candidate profile at jobs.illinois.edu. The application package should include: 1) a curriculum vitae, 2) a statement of teaching goals and interests, 3) a statement on commitment to diversity, 4) all student teaching evaluations (where available), and 5) names and contact information of four references (no letters), all in a single PDF file as an upload in the Resume/CV section. The statement on diversity should address past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, and/or service. To ensure full consideration, applications should be received as soon as possible; for full consideration, apply no later than January 31, 2025, for teaching during the Fall 2025 semester. Applications received after this date may be reviewed, but full consideration is not guaranteed. For further information regarding application procedures, please address questions to Hannah Dorsey, hdorsey@illinois.edu. For all other inquiries please contact Professor Prashant Mehta, mehtapg@illinois.edu.

We have an active and successful dual-career partner placement program and a strong commitment to work-life balance and family-friendly programs for faculty and staff (provost.illinois.edu/faculty-affairs/work-life-balance).
