The Bio-Inspired Dynamics Laboratory, located in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department at Montana State University (MSU), is recruiting MS and PhD students for Fall 2022 to study the biomechanical principles governing insect flight.  Flying insects are complex dynamical systems with an extraordinary ability to interact with their environments with minimal energetic costs and active control.  Our team seeks to better understand the mechanics of the insect flight system to inform the design and optimization of bio-inspired technologies, such as micro air vehicles and energy harvesting devices.

The successful candidate will receive a rigorous education in experimental and theoretical vibrations as well as bio-inspired design.  Laboratory alumni are competitive in aerospace, automotive or other industries where vibration engineering is needed, as well as in National Labs or academia.  Prospective candidates will ideally have the following qualifications:

  • BS (required by Summer 2022) or MS in mechanical, biological, electrical engineering or related
  • An analytical background in mathematics
  • Understanding of MATLAB or other programming languages
  • Experience with computational modeling software, including finite element analysis a
  • Experience with experimental design, data collection and analysis
  • Prior research experience, particularly in dynamics and/or vibrations, is preferred
  • Motivated to work in a team environment
