Job Description:
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering consists of 28 full-time, tenure track faculty members and approximately 120 graduate students and 330 undergraduates and boasts a strong growth trajectory in research. The department’s FY18 research expenditures exceed $12 million/year, placing it at the top of the college of engineering in terms of research funding. The department has outstanding research programs in many areas including Climate Change Adaptation, Water and Wastewater Treatment Processes, Structural Mechanics and Geotechnics, Wind Energy Engineering, Transportation Safety Experimentation and Systems Modeling. The Department is home to the University of Massachusetts Transportation Center and the U.S. EPA Water Innovation Network for Sustainable Small Systems and faculty members participate in interdisciplinary research across the campus, including with the US Department of Interior Climate Science and Adaptation Center. The College of Engineering at UMass Amherst offers B.S. degrees in Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Industrial and Mechanical Engineering and is ranked as the best public engineering college in New England. The fall 2018 enrollment included 2300 undergraduate and 550 graduate students. Research expenditures exceeded $30M in FY18 and the College hosts 16 research centers. The College has an excellent record of developing new faculty with 25 of our current faculty members having received the prestigious NSF CAREER award.

Requirements:
Applications are invited for the position of Head of the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a starting date of September 2019. The position is open to faculty who currently hold the rank of Professor or the equivalent. Exceptionally qualified candidates who hold the rank of Associate Professor (or equivalent) will be considered. The College seeks an individual with a commitment to excellence, a desire to work with faculty and administration, demonstrated leadership and management abilities, and an understanding of diversity issues and their educational importance. The successful candidate will possess academic credentials of the highest quality, have a strong commitment to teaching and research, and have an established and widely recognized reputation in the profession. Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent degree in Civil & Environmental Engineering or a closely related field.
